David Slawiak Gets First Checkered Flag Sprint Win
By Curtis Whalin
(Feb 2, 2008) - Fans at Charlotte County Motor Sports Park on Saturday February 8, 2008 saw the inaugural race of the Checked Flag Sprint Series (CFSS), a newly formed non-wing sprint series headed by Don Rehm, former long term president of the TBARA.
Eleven cars came out to test out the new series and to stretch their racing legs after the winter break, providing the fans with an action filled 30 lap feature race.
Pills were pulled to determine the starting order for the two heat races and then again for the feature race line up. After three cautions before lap 6 all caused by a different car spinning out, lap 6 saw red flag situation after the 56D car of Jeff VanDusen started to spin coming out of turn two and collided with the 2 car of Scott Adema.
The 19 car driven by Keith Butler was unable to avoid the two cars and he run up on their wheels sending the car went airborne. The car landed on its wheels and Keith was able to finish the race, but the other two cars involved were damaged from their collision and had to be taken off the track by a wrecker. Towards the end of the race the 51 car of Mark Gimmler made a good run for the lead but David Slawiak in the 79 car was able to hold him off and take the first ever CFSS win.
Saturday’s race was not for points but point earning races start with the next CFSS race which will be back at Charlotte County Motorsports Park on March 1, 2008. We hope that you will come and support the new club and be part of making what we hope will become one of the best non-wing sprint series in Florida.
NOTE:Don Rehm will be a guest on Inside Florida Racing (www.insidefloridaracing.com) Monday night to discuss the new sprint series.
