Darrell Hanestad Masters Wingless Spec Sprints
SEPTEMBER 29, 2007 --- Darrell Hanestad was in no rush to get to the front of the 22-car wingless spec sprint feature Saturday night at Petaluma Speedway. He knew he had the fastest car on the track, he’d proved that in qualifying, and with 40 laps to go the Clayton veteran wanted to hold back until the scurry for the lead thinned out so he could make his move.
The strategy paid off for Hanestad, the most successful of the spec sprint drivers on Petaluma’s tacky adobe oval, when early leader Herman Klein lost the spot after tangling with lapped traffic 13 laps into the fray and Cody Myers surrendered it two laps later after crashing. When the dust settled, Hanestad took charge and guided his S&S Automotive entry into the diamond lane where he never looked back until taking the checkered flag in the $2500-to-win feature.
“I just wanted to be smooth, sometimes you’ve got to slow down to go faster,” Hanestad said, after winning for the third time in his last five races at Petaluma. Mason Myers of Brown’s Valley pocketed $1500 for second place and San Jose’s Nick Green earned $1000 for finishing third ahead of Terry Shank Jr. and Chris Maboon.
Hanestad’s fast time of 15.133 topped the 32 qualifiers. Charlie Marrs captured the trophy dash and heat race wins went to Green, Billy Aton, Billy Maceda, and Kent Stephens.
Marrs led every lap of the 15-lap B-main and transferred to the feature along with Marc Macray, Keith Shiperd, Buddy Olschowka, Bob Newberry, Roy Fisher, and Jimmy Steward.
