Stanbrough Wins Another
One
Thirty - Eight sprint cars filled our pits last night; and all of them were intent on scoring a feature win. Jon Stanbrough, Jeff Bland, Jr., Cole Whitt, Bobby Stines, and Dickie Gaines were looking for repeat wins. Everyone else was looking form their first win of the season. In spite of the fact that previous winners accounted for only five of the twenty drivers in the feature, probably any of us would gladly wager that the winner would be someone who had found victory lane before this season.
In the first Safety - Kleen sprint car heat, Dickie Gaines charged into the lead from his outside front row starting position. Gaines led the heat flag to flag followed by Shane Golobic, John Paynter, and 14 year old Ricky Williams.
Cole Whitt won the second heat race followed by Kevin Briscoe, Kent Christian, and Russ Gamester.
Lee Stark came from his third place starting position to win the third heat race. Veteran Bloomington Speedway racer Jon Sciscoe came from his seventh place starting position to finish second, just ahead of 15 year old Kenny Niflis. And, Kody Kinser, 18 year old son of veteran winged sprint driver Kelly Kinser, took the final transfer to the feature.
The most serious incident of the evening came in the third heat when Jimmy Light got tangled up with another car; and the left front corner of his mount seemed to fold under. Light shot up to the outside of the track; and collected Kenny Carmichael who did some nasty endos.
Jon Stanbrough came from his fifth place starting position to win the final heat race. Bobby Stines, Danny Holtsclaw, and Todd Kimmel took the final three tickets to the feature event.
Jeff Bland, Jr. led the first "B" feature flag to flag; and Joss Moffatt came from the outside of the second row to take the final transfer to the feature.
Dakoda Armstrong won the second "B" feature from the pole: and Jimmy Light came from his seventh place starting position to finish second and take the last transfer to the feature.
When the green flag dropped to start the feature, Dickie Gaines took the lead from the pole. On the second lap a tangle among Kent Christian, Kody Kinser, and Joss Moffatt brought out a yellow flag; and Jeff Bland, Jr. had to go to the work area. On the following lap, Cole Whitt lost his left front wheel. Although it may well have set a new altitude record, we don't believe that it did any serious damage.
On the sixth lap, fan favorite Kevin Briscoe and Joss Moffatt went to the pits with apparent mechanical woes.
Jon Stanbrough started third and needed nine laps to catch Dickie Gaines and take the lead. Although that may seem pretty quick, it is inordinately slow by this season's standards. In the meantime, 15 year old Kenny Niflis had started 11th; and he was running third when Stanbrough took the lead. On the 12th circuit, Niflis passed Gaines to take second; and it looked very much like he would be able to hang onto second. In spite of subsequent yellow flags, the young rookie kept his mount ahead of the crafty Gaines. However, on the white flag lap, Gaines mounted his final charge. He knew that Niflis was going to force him to pass on the outside. Gaines pulled alongside of Niflis; and his tires stuck. Gaines won by about half a car length. However, Niflis served notice that he would be a force to contend with. In what is, for all practical purposes, Niflis' rookie season he raced the seasoned veteran Gaines down to the final corner. Of course neither Gaines nor Niflis had anything for Stanbrough; but Niflis is only fifteen. Jon Sciscoe, Russ Gamester, Shane Golobic, Bobby Stines, Ricky Williams, Todd Kimmel, and Jeff Bland, Jr. rounded out the top ten.
Russ Gamester drove from his 14th starting position to fifth place finish to take hard charger honors.
