Bobby Stines Tops Friday Racing

A total of 29 sprint cars were unloaded to compete for Safety-Kleen sprint car feature win.

Bobby Stines started his heat race on the inside of the second row and drove to a convincing win followed by Kenny Carmichael, Jr., Danny Holtsclaw, Jimmy Light, and Coleman Gulick.

Cole Whitt started on the outside of the first row and won his heat race by a wide margin ahead of Kevin Thomas, Jr., Arin McIntosh, Jeff Bland, Jr., and Chad Boespflug. Ty Deckard was running well when he tangled with another car and got on his lid.

Dickie Gaines returned to action last night in the 11P that has been driven by Kent Christian this season. He started his heat race on the pole and drove to a win. Chad Boat started fourth; and secured a second place finish. Brett Burdette, Jon Sciscoe, and Kenny Niflis took the rest of the transfer spots from the third heat.

Bub Cummings led the first lap of the "B" feature before losing the point to Geoff Dodge who led the rest of the way to the checkered flag. John Poynter, Cummings, A.J. Marten, and Dakoda Armastrong picked up the rest of the tickets to the feature from the "B" feature.

Cole Whitt got a strong start in the feature; and it looked like he might be headed for his second feature win of the season. On the sixth lap a tangle featuring Jimmy Light, and John Poynter brought out a yellow flag that wound up sidelining Poynter.

Whitt held the lead on the restart; but, on the ninth circuit, Bobby Stines slipped past him to take the lead. On the tenth circuit a tangle among Bub Cummings, Coleman Gulick, and Geoff Dodge that got Cummings upside down and ended the night for all three of them. When racing resumed, Stines held his advantage all the way to the checkered flag.

Cole Whitt held onto second place until he drove under the white flag; but Jeff Bland, Jr. slipped under him to take second place. Whitt was forced to settle for third. Danny Holtsclaw and Dickie Gaines rounded out the top five.

Fifteen year old Kenny Niflis made a very impressive run driving from his 15th starting position to an impressive sixth place finish. Another youngster, 14 year old Coleman Gulick came all the way from Binghampton, N.Y. to compete on the red clay. He had some trouble in the feature; but he did a great job of getting there.
