Cole Whitt Captures Bonus Bucks

Last night something happened for the second time this season. Fifteen year old Cole Whitt of Alpine, Calif. scored his first feature of his young career at Bloomington Speedway.. However, it didn't come as a real big surprise for any of the racers or fans present. Cole has been looking like he is ready to score his first Safety-Kleen sprint car feature almost from the start of the season. Cole is another of a long list of drivers who have made their way from California to take on the top sprint car drivers in the nation. They know that if they're going to make it to the top, they have to prove what they can do against the best.

A total of 32 sprint cars were unloaded to compete for a berth in the evening's Safety-Kleen sprint car feature. Chad Boat started on the outside of the front row and drove to a heat race win in the first heat. Chris Babcock, John Paynter, and Kenny Carmichael took the other three tickets to the feature.

Casey Shuman won the second heat trailed by Jared Fox, Bobby Stines, and Kenny Carmichael, Jr. In the third heat, Brady Short won from the pole ahead of Danny Holtsclaw Jon Sciscoe, and Jeff Bland, Jr.

Brett Burdette took the fourth heat from the pole. Cole Whitt Dickie Gaines, and Ty Deckard took the final three sports from the heat races.

Dakoda Armstrong took the lead in the "B" feature at the drop of the green flag; and Kenny Niflis dropped in behind him to take over second. On the second circuit, Shawn Krockenberger moved into second place; and, a lap later, Ricky Williams moved into the final transfer position. On the sixth lap Niflis and Lee Stark tangle of the front stretch; and Todd Kimmell inherits the final transfer from the "B" feature.

Cole Whitt made his best move of the night up until that time when he drew the #1 pill in the redraw to align the feature. He used his starting position on the pole to good advantage in taking the lead at the drop of the green flag; and he held it until the checkered flags waved. Chris Babcock held onto second for much of the early going.

Kenny Carmichael started 13th; and, by the end of the tenth circuit, he was running in the top ten. Five laps later, Carmichael was running fourth. In the meantime, Brady Short had moved into second place. On the 18th circuit, Carmichael, Sr moved past Brady Short to take second. As they charge to the checkered flag, Dickie Gaines passed Brady Short to take third. Short and Jeff Bland, Jr. rounded out the top five.

Todd Kimmell started the feature in 20th place and worked his way up to a strong eighth place finish.
