Jon Stanbrough Collects Bonus Night
Win
May is more than half gone and Jon Stanbrough has just made his first visit of the season to victory lane at Bloomington Speedway. Of course it was only the second running of the season for the for the Safety-Kleen sprint cars. The first outing was, of course, the Elliottbrand Clash and Dave Darland took that one. One of our scorers who keeps track of such things advised us that Jon had prevailed in four out of his last seven attempts. And two of those wins had been in KISS Series races. So far, Stanbrough's 2007 season is starting to appear to be a continuation of his 2006 season. We're pretty sure that that is OK with Jon. Shelby Miles is off to an even better start in the O'Neal Wood Products modifieds. He has put two wins in the books. However, it is something of a mixed blessing for Shelby. In accordance with track rules, he will start the feature no better than tenth next week. Defending Tire & Wheel Cener super stock champion found victory lane for the first time in 2007.
SAFETY-KLEEN SPRINT CARS --
Prior the beginning of racing Arin McIntosh drew the #1 pill to start on the pole for the first heat. Many of those in attendance almost certainly expected a expected a freight train to pass Arin. However, they quickly learned how wrong they had been. Brett Burdette came from the tail to challenge Arin late in the going but she held on to take the win. Although it is would probably be politically incorrect to keep track of such things, we believe her to be the first of the fair sex to win a race on the red clay of Bloomington Speedway.
The second heat had Jon Stanbrough starting on the front row; and he drove to a fairly convincing win. The excitement in this race came at the finish line when young Cole Whitt crossed it upside down just missing a transfer to the feature. Brady Short and Danny Holtsclaw took the final two heat races.
Cole Whitt's crew were obviously busy getting his car that had so recently been upside down put back together. Because he had finished his heat fifth he got to start on the outside of the front row with Jon Sciscoe on the pole. When the green flag dropped, Sciscoe took the lead and led Whitt all the way to the checkered flag. Kenny Biro and Todd Kimmell picked up the final two tickets to the feature.
The redraw to align the first four rows of the feature put Kent Christian and Brett Burdette on the front row; and it put Jon Stanbrough on the outside of the third row. When the green dropped to start the feature, Christian took the point; but a tangle involving Jared Fox, Jon Sciscoe, and Geoff Dodge necessitated a complete restart. When the field crossed the line to complete the first circuit Christian held the point followed Brett Burdette. In that first lap Stanbrough had ;moved from sixth to third. Was anyone surprised? Probably not.
On the second lap Burdette spun in turn two and brought out the second yellow. That put Stanbrough in second place. Christian would almost certainly have been more comfortable if Stanbrough had had to contend with Burdette for a few more laps. However, Kent held the lead until the ninth circuit when Stanbrough got past him.
Stanbrough continued to stretch out his lead for the rest of the race; and it was clear that the battle was for second place. Unless something went drastically awry Jon would be in victory lane. Something did go awry when Jon Sciscoe flipped on the 24th circuit. After the red flag, it came down to a green - white - checker. Christian had another chance but probably little of snatching the win away from Stanbrough. He would have to be satisfied to be the best of the rest last night
