Season Opener A Huge Success
The long awaited season opener at Orland Raceway
finally was held on Saturday, April 29th after four consecutive
rain-outs put everybody's fun on hold. But under beautiful
summer-like skies, racers and fans converged on the Glenn County
Fairgrounds and the fun began. A-1 Check Cashing Services of Orland,
Corning, Chico was the night's sponsor, providing goodies for fans and
offering a Tee-Shirt toss for some lucky "catchers".
Taylor Simas was Orland Raceway's 2005 track champion
in the Mini Truck division, but in the off-season his Dad bought a
Wingless Sprint, and Taylor seems to have taken to the new ride
quickly as he won the first Feature event of '06 in his #7t machine.
Starting from the rear of the field, Taylor had worked his way up to
the lead position when a wild flip happened on the 12th circuit. Carl
Green and Reyna Kneger tangled in turn two, both flipping, giving Don
Emery no room to run so he ran into the stalled pair. All three
drivers were sidelined for the evening but no injuries occurred.
Taylor held off charges by veteran Phil Pedlar of Sacramento, who
finished in second. Orland's Greg Higginbotham took the third
position, followed by Wilton's John Anderson and Woodland's Bill
Boosembark. Higginbotham and Willows' Josh Jacobo were heat race
winners; Higginbotham was the Trophy Dash victor.
Stephanie Hershkowitz of Preferred Agents Real Estate
will be the Sponsor for the upcoming May 6th event. Stephanie
will raffle off two $100 gasoline vouchers to adults attending the
races. Pit gate will open at 4PM, grandstands open at 5 and
racing begins at 7:00. General admission is $10; kids and seniors are
$5; under six or over seventy are admitted free. For information
