Arvo Backholm Holds Off Darrell
Hanestad For First Wingless Win, Ballou Wins GSC
In only his second season running
the Wingless Sprint cars, Arvo Backholm held off repeated challenges
from Sprint Car ace Darrell Hanestad to win his first career Wingless
Sprint Main Event on Saturday. Hanestad made repeated challenges
to pass Backholm on the dry track but could not make a pass stick.
Scott Merrell ran third behind the leaders, followed by Joey Santos
and previous race winner Jim Perry Jr.
The visiting Golden State Challenge
Sprint Cars made their second and final appearance of 2005 at Antioch
and it was Robert Ballou winning the Main Event. Ballou started
on the pole of the 22 car field. Jonathon Allard started fourth
and finished behind Ballou. Quick qualifier Brent Kaeding, who
had posted the quickest time of 11.728, surged from eighth starting
spot to finish third. Behind Kaedin, it was Sean Becker and
Stephan Allard rounding out the top 5.
