After nearly a month of cancellations, Placerville Speedway finally
opened its gates Saturday night to begin the El Dorado County New Car
Dealer, Hoosier Racing Tires Championship season. Four divisions were
on hand for the opener that welcomed and impressive 87 cars to the pit
area and a nearly full grandstand of eager race fans.
The wingless sprint cars had 17 drivers in the feature event that saw
its share of quality side by side driving by drivers aboard machines
known as the “grassroots of open wheel racing”. This event was not
sanctioned by a series but presented by John Padjen Motorsports.
The 25-lap feature event opened with Kenny Bair of
Woodland grabbing the lead on the green flag lap. Bair was being
chased down for several laps by defending Antioch champion Bob
Newberry. Newberry closed in on Bair several times but it wasn’t
until a slight stall during a restart cost Bair the lead.
Once in front Newberry was running strong until former
Gold Cup champion Darrell “the hammer” Hanestad closed in on the
leader. Hanestad started ninth in the feature and pulled beside
Newberry several different times before finally taking the lead in the
waning laps.
Once in front, Hanestad was still challenged by
Newberry to the finish line where the order was Hanestad followed by
Newberry, Tim Sherman, Rick Oshea, Patrick Russum and Keith Shipherd.
“The track was a little dry, a little wet. It was
smooth but had a few holes, it was everything a racer wants for
opportunity tonight,” said Hanestad. “This race was definitely
worth the drive tonight and a lot of our drivers really enjoyed
running here tonight and look forward to coming back."
