Fans & Drives Eagerly Greet Orland Raceway's Season Opener
After a long five month "off-season" fans
were anxious to return to the 1/5 mile banked oval track in Orland for
some long awaited racing action and the drivers were equally ready to
take their machines out on the track. Both groups came away happy with
what turned out to be a great night, accented by beautiful weather.
In the Sprint division, defending champion Tony
Richards made a clean sweep with a heat win, a trophy dash victory and
a Main Event win. After last week's rain-out of the Spring
Classic in Orland, Tony traveled to Marysville to win the Sprint race
there, and is headed toward what appears to be a great season.
Adam Schroer was Richards' closest competitor, putting pressure on him
for the lead as both drivers lapped cars to finish in the one-two
positions. Rookie for the division is Orland's Greg
Higginbotham, who won his heat race; he can be expected to do well in
his rookie year, following in his Dad Pat's footsteps.
Orland Raceway's newest rule makes the weekly events
more challenging. Line-ups for all races are done by point
standings, so non-members will be required to start at the back of
each event. Those with points will be inverted, with the highest
point holder starting at the back, directly in front of non-members.
Next Saturday's schedule includes a Kid's Candy Drop.
Youngsters can enjoy a small scale version of Halloween or an Easter
Egg Hunt, without the need for a costume OR an Easter basket.
Grandstands will open at 5:00 PM and racing will begin at 7:00.
General admission is $8.00; kids and seniors are $4.00. Under
six or over seventy are admitted free of charge. For more
information about upcoming events at Orland Raceway, call the track
office at 530/865-2409.
