Saturday night was the
final event of the 2004 Kings Speedway season. The Bandit Sprint Car
Series fielded a solid 32 entries for the 10th Annual
Western Speed and Fuel Dirt Track Nationals.
Aaron
Chaney of Clovis who was a definite underdog going into the
weekend made it look easy as he went on to win the $ 3000 top prize
Saturday night.
Emotion ran high in
victory lane as the Loan Oak Lodge/Ahern Rentals # 69 slid into
winners circle.Former SCRA/Bandit competitor Jarrett (Aaron’s
brother) ran the length of the front straight to do a nice 9.5 “swan
dive” onto the hood overwhelmed with emotion.
The dismayed runner up Danny
Sheridan was happy for Aaron however at the same time displaying
obvious frustration."We should of won.",said
Sheridan
.”I tried everything I could to get around him”.
Chaney rolled the bottom
on a hard and slick Kings surface for the majority of the feature. He
held off a hard charging group which consisted of five racers who are
pre-entered in the Perris Auto
Speedway Oval Nationals.
Australian Peter
Murphy in the Tarlton and Sons Contruction # 21,a perfect marriage
between man and racecar could only muster a third place
finish.”Petah” who is known for his “no cushion fearing style”
was handcuffed too the bottom as the top eroded.
Finishing in the fourth
position was a driver who had appeared to throw him and myself into a
2002 flashback. Jimmy
“Nuetron” Crawford (2002 VRA Champ) perhaps with the best
handling machine started outside row three. Crawford at one point
slipped back to as far as 8th ,located the sweet spots low
in turns two and four. Crawford used the “diamond” maneuver lap
after lap actually taking the lead momentarily off of turn two only to
be shoved back to third as the caution waved.
Rounding out the top five
was
Simi Valley
resident and father of two Chris
Wakim.
Wakim started outside row
four and was dialed in from the get go. He picked off Crawford and
Sheridan early with a sweet move off of turn two. Wakim who was a heat
race winner Friday night looked good and proved that the veteran can
get it down in the
Central Valley
.
The Western Speed and Fuel
Dirt Track Nationals always a fun event as it brings out some cars and
stars of the 360 kind. It was nice too see VRA’s Crawford
and Wakim make the tow to
attend the highest paying wingless 360 race in this state.
NOTES
:
Jason Yount scratched from the A-main(motor).
Bill Jones (alternate)
starts 22nd in the A.
Jonathan
Logan flipped in turn three in the feature. Driver is ok.
Garrett
Hansen broke a driveline and sustained an ankle injury.
Davey
Pombo and Chris D’Arcy
were involved in a hot lap double flip which did not affect the
feature line up as they made repairs to race.
