- Greg is the son of former sprint car driver Wendell
Anderson, and nephew of former sprint car and midget
champions Johnny and Billy Anderson.
Greg Anderson lists his first year in
racing as 1987. As he is only 22, some quick math tells you
he’s been racing just slightly less than all his life! Born in
Sacramento, Greg began life destined to become a
third-generation racer. By the age of five, the son of long-time
sprint car campaigner, Wendell Anderson was traveling the
western U.S. racing Quarter Midgets. Early starts in racing are
nothing new to the Anderson family. His dad and uncles Billy and
Johnny also started racing quarter midgets as kids before
becoming noted oval track stars and young Greg wants nothing
less than to become a driving star in his own right.
The Anderson family history touches nearly
every form of motor sports from quarter midgets, go-karts,
midgets, sprinters, champ cars, supermodifieds and yes, even
Indy cars. Greg has added even more types of racing to this
extensive list. On top of winning over a hundred quarter midget
races and 5 track championships before he was 12, Anderson raced
Micro-sprints for two years where at the STP Nationals in Tulsa,
OK he won a preliminary race and finished 5th in the feature –
the youngest driver in the field.
Go-karts and Legend cars were the next
vehicles to be ushered into victory lane by the now
“veteran” 14 year old. Karts provided road-course experience
and the Legend series added the foundation for his next
endeavor, the Nor-Cal Touring series, where in 1997 Greg was
named Rookie of the Year finishing fifth in the series.
Now 16, Greg Anderson was finally old
enough to get his drivers license; necessary for his next stop,
NASCAR Winston Racing Series Late Models where Greg finished
10th in points. In 1999 Greg competed in the Tri-State Open Comp
Late Models, was a full-time crewmember on a NAPA Winston West
team, polished his skills as an auto body painter, and attended
high school! The 2000 season found Greg with the Featherlite
Southwest Tour and NASCAR Super Late Model Series where he
honored with two awards, the Gatorade Front Runner and the Hard
Charger Award.
Greg packed his bags and moved to North
Carolina in 2002 to compete at the starting grounds of many
Nextel Cup stars, Caraway Speedway. Greg captured one pole and
had several top 10 finishes before deciding to come home, he now
resides in Antelope, CA, and join forces with his dad, Wendell.
Anderson and his dad have assembled a
potent CASA sprint car for the 2004 season and hope to travel
the western states in pursuit of Greg’s first Sprintcar
championship. Greg notes, “The success I’ve experienced in
other forms of racing will definitely be to my advantage in my
rookie season. I know there will be plenty of competition and
I’m up for the challenge!”
Something in young Mister Andersons past
assures us he will certainly be up to the challenge during his
first Sprintcar season, and the California Asphalt Sprintcar
Association is proud to add this talented racer to its roster.
