LATE-RACE SURGE GIVES FORD ALL COAST WIN AT VENTURA by Lee Elder |

VENTURA, Calif. (May 30, 2009) – Camarillo’s Josh Ford became the 11th different driver to win a Sprint Car Division feature race at Ventura Raceway in as many events when he captured the All Coast Construction Challenge here Saturday. Ford started on the inside of the third row and spent the first 20 laps of the 30-lap race stalking leaders Kevin Kierce and Troy Rutherford before finally jumping in front to lead the 23rd circuit around Ventura’s quarter-mile oval. Over the final eight laps, Kierce and Ford exchanged the lead five times before Ford led the final two laps. The wild finish left the crowd, announcers and drivers drained. Willey Miller (Yorba Linda) won the Senior Sprint Car feature, Brad Prows (Ojai) won the IMCA Modified main event, Brian Saxton (Mentone) won the Pro Dwarf feature, Tom Bellinger (Cypress) won the Senior Dwarf final, Zachery Gilmore (Woodland Hills) won in Mini Dwarf-Pistons, Oliver Blades (Moorpark) won the Mini Dwarf-Superchargers race and Luke Boles (Goleta) won in the Junior Midgets class. Ford’s victory was worth $2,000 in the special series-within-a-season All Coast Construction Challenge. The three-race series is part of the regular season for the Sprint Car Division at Ventura, but the events have their own points system and there is extra money involved. Kierce (Reseda), the two-time track champion and current points leader, led the first 18 laps before Ojai’s Troy Rutherford led for one lap. Kierce resumed control for two more laps before he and Ford started their free-for-all. Ford worked the low groove. Kierce worked the track’s outside groove and grazed the outside wall in turn four near the end of the race. Kierce and Rutherford have won a race during the string of one-time winners and were among six drivers in the field with a shot at snapping the streak. But the streak lives for at least another week. Miller led the final four laps of the Senior Sprint Car feature and forged a tie with Ventura’s Bruce Douglas for the points lead. Douglas finished third. Prows took the lead on the fourth lap of the IMCA race and held on, staying in front of a frenetic race for the spots behind him. Saxton’s win was much the same story, but his slick move at the start of the race put him in position to take the lead on the third lap of his race. Bellinger led all 15 laps of his main event. In the youth divisions, Gilmore led every lap of the Mini Dwarf-Pistons race and Luke Boles did the same in the Junior Midgets. Blades had to catch and pass Port Hueneme’s Joseph Magana on the eight lap of the Mini Dwarf-Supercharger race. Ventura Raceway Race Results for 05/30/2009 VRA Sprint Cars: 1.
