VENTURA, Calif. (May 12, 2009) – Recent research conducted by the United States Auto Club has determined that Ventura Raceway has been the sanctioning body’s most active venue since the Raceway began operations in 1986.
All told, Ventura Raceway has conducted 314 USAC events. The breakdown, provided by USAC, is below.
“Our relationship with USAC has been very important to Ventura Raceway,” said promoter Jim Naylor. “When you really look at it, USAC got our little track multiple exposures on national television through the Thursday Night Thunder series on ESPN and that has meant a great deal to us through the years.”
The Raceway is Ventura County’s leader in nationally-televised sports events.
Naylor was named USAC’s Race Organizer of the Year 1991 and 2007.
Ventura Raceway will add three more USAC races to its history on May 23 when the Western States Midgets, Ford Focus Midgets and Junior Focus Midgets are scheduled.
“I’ve never counted the races, so I had no idea how many times we’ve had USAC here,” Naylor admitted. “We started with TQ midgets in the early years. The track was a lot shorter then. We’ve lengthened it a few times and we’ve hosted USAC sprint cars.”
The Raceway plans to host one of its biggest events ever on November 21, when USAC midgets will race for a $5,000 winner’s purse.
“Most of the top midget racers in the country will be in Southern California around that time because of the annual Turkey Night race,” Naylor said. “Our race is a few days before that event and we’ll get a lot of the national hot shots at our place.”
