Santa Maria, CA - June 13, 2009...USAC/CRA Non-Winged 410 Sprint Cars didn't
disappoint Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway when they were joined by NMRA
TQ Midgets, California Lightning Sprints, and MMI Factory Stocks for the 5th
Annual Ron Otto Memorial.
*The 30-lap USAC/CRA Sprint Car feature event took three starts before racing began in earnest. The first start saw John Aden, of Apple Valley, bring out the red when he flipped in turn one. The second start found local favorite, and front row starter, Danny Sheridan, of Santa Maria, go over in turn four while battling eventual winner Garrett Hansen, of Manhattan Beach, for the lead. Temecula's Mike Spencer gave Hansen a run for his money before settling for second place ahead of Riverside's David Cardey, Tipton's Danny Faria, Jr., and Ventura's Cory Kruseman. Aden, Cody Williams, of Yorba Linda, and Greg Bragg, of Visalia, captured 10-lap heat races. *Richard Ortega, Jr., of Camarillo, was thrilled with his 25-lap feature victory in the NMRA TQ Midget division. Ortega chased second place finisher Greg Edenholm, of Malibu, for 20 laps before making the winning pass. Kenny Wiley, of Sunland, placed third, with Newbury park's Scott Dobson fourth, and Moorpark's West Evens fifth. Edenholm and Anthony Lopiccolo, of Brea, were 8-lap heat winners. *Corey Ballard, of Orange, picked up the lead from San Diego's Bobby Bender on the 10th circuit of the 25-lap California Lightning Sprint main event. From there it was all uphill for Ballard, who won the event, and downhill for Bender who ended up flipping in turn four. Second place Stuart Hielscher, Jr. had Stuart, Sr. right behind him. The two Murrieta drivers outdistanced A.J. Bender, of Ramona, and Dan Hillberg of Placentia. Ballard made it a perfect evening by winning his 8-lap heat race as-well-as the feature and Wink Schweitzer, of Bakersfield, took the other heat. *Factory Stocks were allowed to run a non-points race along with the three open wheel divisions. Arroyo Grande's Dale Sylvester fought hard to secure his second feature victory of the season in the 25-lap event. Michael Frazier, of Santa Maria, drove to a second place finish, with Charlie Scovell, of Atascadero, third. Bruce Johnson, of Bakersfield, and Kyle Camperud, of Watsonville, filled in the top-five. Frazier and Camperud won 8-lap heat races. *Next Saturday night Papich Construction IMCA Modifieds, MMI Factory Stocks, Toste Grading & Paving Mini Stocks, and NMRA TQ Midgets take to the 1/3-mile oval. Admission prices will be $14.00 for adults, $12.00 for seniors and military, and $5.00 for children six to twelve. Kids five and under are free. Spectator gates will open at 3:00 p.m., with qualifying at 5:00 p.m. and racing at 6:00 p.m. SMS is located 1/4-mile north of the US 101/166 interchange on Hutton Road.
