2nd point race produces repeat winners in Red Hawk Championship Series
by Bill Sullivan

PLACERVILLE, CA (04/18/09) --- Four divisions of racing took to the quarter-mile ASA Sanctioned Placerville Speedway Saturday night for the second Red Hawk Casino – Hoosier Tires Championship point race of the season.

Andy Forsberg of Auburn continued his early season success streak with his second consecutive feature win in the Pacific Sprint Car Division. TomTilford of Citrus Heights posted his second win of the year in the Pure Stocks. Defending Champion Dan Brown Jr. of Nevada City won the Limited Late Model-Pro Stock feature event while former track champion Billy Wallace of Grass Valley scored his first wingless feature at Placerville.

With an eight car inversion for the night, Forsberg could not have asked for a better starting position, on the pole of the 25-lap feature event. From the waving of the initial green flag, Forsberg dominated the event, working his way into lapped traffic as early as the sixth lap while third place starter Andy Gregg of Placerville broke into the bridesmaid position followed by fourth place starter Camron Mendes of Rohnert Park.

While Forsberg worked his way deep into lapped traffic, Gregg and Mendes sliced and diced their way into the thicket of back markers with fast qualifier Mason Moore of Princeton in their wake for much of the race. As Forsberg crossed the line for his second Red Hawk Casino victory of the year he was followed by Gregg. Moore muscled past Mendes for third place, Mendes clinched fourth followed by Matt Barber of Placerville.

“Mason Moore drew the inversion pill tonight and I really have to thank him, that eight worked out just perfect for me and put us up front,” said Forsberg. “Lapped traffic was huge for us tonight and that’s what this place is all about. This track is best thing happening these days and I hope we continue to see these nice big crowds out year all year.”

In the Limited Late Model-Pro Stock feature event, defending champion Dan Brown Jr. of Nevada City drove to his first feature win of the season aboard his family owned Impala. Brown started on the pole of the feature event and led all 15-laps of the event.

Brown held off the challenges of veteran driver Mike Lightfoot of Placerville who made his first start of the season. Lightfoot overtook second place Forryst Carnett early in the race along with Yuba City’s Jerry Bartlett who advanced from sixth position and was fighting an ill handling car stemming from a crash during his heat race. At the checkered flag Brown was followed by Lightfoot, Bartlett, Carnett and Norton.

“Its nice to get a win again,” said Brown. “If we keep doing well we can come back the next week because sponsors are pretty limited this year. With the division changing to Late Models, getting a win this year is going to be tough but I’m really looking forward to it. Competition is a good thing and we need the cars.”

In the Pure Stock feature event, Tilford charged from his third place starting position into the lead after a battle with pole sitter Scott Grunert of Woodland. He then drove his way to a distant margin over the field with fourth place starter Heather Bartlett of Chico in tow.

With several lapped cars between she and the leader, it took Bartlett much of the race to close in on Tilford. With a white flag waving signaling one lap remaining, Bartlett took advantage of lapped traffic and charged to the outside of the track to drive around Tilford for the lead until a caution flag flew, forcing her back into second place for a final restart. At the checkered flag it was Tilford followed by Bartlett, John Durrett of Pollock Pines, Eddie Gardner of Sacramento and Rick Grunert of Woodland.

“Let me tell you guys something, Heather Bartlett is one fierce competitor and that girl is going to win some races at this place, she almost did tonight,”said Tilford. “I’m usually the victim of the yellow flag but tonight it finally saved me for a change because she got around me in that deal.”

In the visiting Wingless Sprints feature, former track winged champion Billy Wallace of Grass Valley picked up the victory. The race was initially led by Nick Davis of Stockton until a collision sent him upside down on the sixth lap. Wallace then assumed the lead and was challenged for much of the race by Geoff Ensign of Sebastapol who later fell out of contention when he and Wallace made contact. At the checkered flag it was Wallace followed by Josh Bates, Matt Streeter, Taylor Simas and Scott Hall.

“We had a tough night in the winged cars tonight but we got our first win here in the wingless,” said Wallace. “That always seems to the way when you race two divisions. I’m happy we’re here though.”

Racing resumes at Placerville Speedway this Saturday with the third championship event of the season featuring the Winged Sprint Cars, Limited Late Model-Pro Stocks and Pure Stocks along with the Nor Cal Dwarf Cars.
