APRIL 22, 2009 --- COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. - When the NorthWest Wingless Tour opens its inaugural season on Saturday, there will surely be some sprint car racers who will take the wings off to try their hand at non-wing racing.
On Wednesday, Kyle Miller, the two-time and reigning Cottage Grove Speedway champion, confirmed himself that he will go topless too at Saturday's Grove Classic.
Miller, a 19-year-old who resides in Cottage Grove, won the track's limited sprint car title in 2007 before bumping up to 360 sprint cars in 2008. He didn't miss a beat there when he won a few events and captured the track championship in that class. Driving a limited sprint car again this past Saturday, Miller made a late race charge to pick up another main event victory.
Driving the Miller Racing No. 10 XXX car, Kyle will compete with wingless veterans Gary Davis and Keary Morris, themselves former non-wing sprint car champions. Having raced a lot at his hometown track already, Miller will have homefield advantage.
The Grove Classic, a staple of winged 360 sprint car racing at Cottage Grove Speedway since 2002, will be held this Friday and Saturday. On Saturday, wingless sprint cars will be part of the Grove Classic for the first time when the NorthWest Wingless Tour takes to the 1/4-mile clay oval.
Cottage Grove Speedway is located about 20 minutes drive south of Eugene at the WOE Fairgrounds in the north part of Cottage Grove. Pit gates open at 3:00 and spectator gates open at 4:00. Qualifying is scheduled for 5:30 followed by racing around 6:45 both nights. Cottage Grove Speedway's website is at http://www.cottagegrovespeedway.com.
