Hammond Put the Hammer Down

NCMA Sprints - All American Speedway
Roseville, CA - May 16, 2009

Rob Hammond pulled a “hot one” tonight as he won the first NCMA Sprints race at All American Speedway this season. Towing all the way from Morgan Hill into the 100 degree heat of Roseville didn’t stop him from making it to the front.

Hammond started off the day in fairly good shape as he qualified second quick behind Ed Amador who set fast time. Napa’s David Goodwill was third fast, Pat Ariaz, of Manteca, fourth and David Burchett from Tracy hit the five spot.

With Qualifying complete, two dashes were held. Bill Hendricks in his first venture with NCMA this year sat the pole with Woodland’s Gary Koster on the outside. Burt Siverling held the inside second row and Burchett was behind Koster. Hendricks had a spin out on the first lap and at the restart; Koster grabbed it and made short work of winning the first Dash.

Ariaz and Goodwill made up the front row of the second dash, Hammond and E. Amador the second row. After a restart, Goodwill made quick laps to win the second dash.

The Main Event started with a total inversion of the field. Pole sitter was Concord’s Siverling. Outside of the first row was Koster. Ariaz and Burchett were third and fourth, with “Hot Rod” Hammond starting fifth. Hendricks chose to start in the rear beside Amador. Taking the green and racing into turn two, Siverling got by but Koster ended up facing the infield with Ariaz launched into his cockpit with his front wheels next to Koster’s helmet. After lifting Ariaz off of Koster, the 17K got refired. Ariaz headed for the pits to check everything out and reentered before the green was thrown. During this entire melee, Hammond was hauling the mail, going from fifth right to first. Goodwill was able to give him a little go, but by halfway, Hammond was five lengths ahead of him and everyone else. Goodwill held second easily. Koster ended up third and Modesto’s Amador, who started dead last took fourth. After all was said and done, Ariaz, somewhat worse for the wear, rounded out the top five.

NCMA Sprints observe the Memorial Holiday with their families and friends and return to All American Speedway on Saturday, May 30th for the second in the six race series on the totally different configured track. Total Racing excitement for Saturday night short track racing. Check it out!
