Aton is the Bomb! |

NCMA Sprints - Ocean Speedway Watsonville, CA - April 17, 2009 Ocean Speedway hosted the first NCMA Select Dirt Series race this evening. Benicia’s” Wild Bill” Aton was the first winner for the first in the series. Aton should be better known as the Aton Bomb as he literally explodes to the front. Aton had a great run in the Select Dirt Series last season and looks to do the same this year. Qualifying heats were held with Frank Addiego and Howard Fergerson, Jr. bringing the pack to the green. In an early incident Dan Gonderman caught the worst of it and was run over leaving him with a ruined wheel and flat tire. Young Devon Ostheimer and Kris Koontz took the one-two positions for that heat. David Goodwill, in his first dirt outing this year, and Mark Chavez, Jr. gathered the group for the start of the second heat. No major incidents, just good hard racing. Chavez, Jr. and Billy Aton were first and second in this heat setting their positions for the 25 lap main event. Ostheimer and Chavez, Jr. held the pole and shotgun. Koontz, Aton and Kent Stephens started third, fourth and fifth. The green flag dropped and the 360’s were on the hunt. Chavez, Jr. was driving like a fox and the hounds were chasing him down. Only a couple of caution flags flew with more than half of the race finished before they happened. Stephens got caught in one incident, but was not any worse for the run in. Aton finally got around Chavez, Jr. with six laps to go. Gonderman ended up head on with Tommy LaLiberte, after LaLiberte got spun around on the last lap. No one hurt, no sprint cars wrecked, pretty good outing for the NCMA Dirt Select Series first race of the season. “Wild Bill “was the winner, and Chavez, Jr. took second. Veteran racer,Sparky Howard, was a well earned third as he started twelfth. Ryan Bernal finished in fourth, and Ostheimer rounded out the top five. NCMA Sprints will return to the pavement and race at the new Stockton 99 Speedway on Saturday, May 2nd.
