Haubstadt, IN - June 22, 2009. The Hoosier Tire Midwest Sprint Car Series was idle this last weekend but will resume action on Saturday June 27th at the Vermilion County Speedway in Danville, IL. Race time is set for 7 P.M. It will be the first visit to the quarter mile oval for the MSCS sprinters since June of 2003. A.J. Anderson won that night.
A lot has happened since then. Hud Cone won the MSCS championship in 2003. Another 5 series titles have been decided since then. Alex Shanks (with 3) and Kyle Cummins (with 2) have collected those laurels. Cummins is at the top of the current standing with Ricky Williams having now taken on the role of the challenger after being last season’s MSCS Rookie of the Year. Brandon Mattox and Adam Nigg currently head the Gross Enterprises Rookie of the Year standings. Five of the 12 top MSCS drivers in points are rookies and they include Nick Faas, Chase Briscoe, and Bub Cummings.
At Danville promoter Joe Spiker has reintroduced sprint car racing to the quarter mile Vermilion County Fairgrounds oval as a weekly venue. The non wing contingency have responded and I-74 has become a busy corridor with team transports and trailers carrying Illinois cars and drivers East and Indiana drivers West to compete there on Saturday nights.
Many of the MSCS regulars have had several chances to compete at the Danville track this season. Ricky Williams of Clinton, OH, picked up a feature victory last Saturday night and has worked his way into the top ten in track points. Former Champion Hud Cone has two top three finishes in weekly events there. The points leader at Vermilion County after 10 races is A.J. Anderson of Stateline, IN.
The racing card will pay tribute to the Legends of Sprint Car Racing. The event known as the Sprint Legends of Danville will pay $2,000 to win. It promises to be an exciting 25 laps. MSCS races have produced 5 different winners in the five events held this season at four other tracks. At Danville the 10 non-wing races have produced 8 different feature winners. Only Korey Weyant and Jon Stanbrough have repeated with victories. Half the 21 car starting field Saturday night could already be 2009 feature winners! The other half will be looking for win number one.
