Becker caps winged main as Richards and Maclaughlin 3-peat. Horn and Foster also triumph
by Bob Burbach
MAY 16, 2009 - Marysville, CA ---  The MRP Winged Sprint Cars returned to Paul and Kathy Hawes’ Marysville Raceway Park Saturday and Sean Becker roared to a wire to wire win in the featured event. Tony Richards grabbed his third consecutive feature win in the Brown’s Valley RV Wingless Warrior Sprint Car Series as did Tim Maclaughlin in the Pro 4 Sprint Car Main. James Foster held off a hard charging Brent Hall in the MRP Mini Stock finale and ageless Willie Horn literally smoked the field in the MRP Super Stock closer.

A full field of 92 entrants swelled the MRP pit area and with the exception of Mike Monahan’s blown motor in hot laps, everyone ran. 100 degree heat didn’t deter the fine crowd that flowed through the gates. The heat and breezy conditions were a challenge for promoter Hawes. But, there were few yellows, very competitive events and ALL of the scheduled laps in ALL of the divisions were run. This, a testament to promoter Hawes dedication to the racers who show up to our house regardless of whether they run in a support division or not.

In the MRP Winged Sprint Car finale pole sitter Becker was uncatchable. He bolted from his front row starting position and led the entire distance unchallenged. Some serious slicing and dicing was going on behind him however as the point contenders for the ’09 title were jockeying for positions during the entire race. Korey Lovell got to 2nd in the end followed by Brent Dothage, Cort Dozier and Jeremy Burt. Lovell’s run to 2nd got him within 2 points of series leader Burt. Lovell is in a quest to become MRP’s only 4 time champion. Dothage is now within 4 points of the leader in 3rd in the closest point race in recent memory.

Lovell’s run to 2nd also got him the Contingency Connection bonus this week amounting to some $1250 in contingency awards. Winner Becker was not a member of the association.

The Brown’s Valley RV Wingless Warrior Sprint Car Series jumbled the points as well when point leader Cody Myers had difficulties in the main event for the Wingless Warriors.

Cort Dozier and Brian Southers wrestled for the top spot at the green, but by the end of the first circuit 3rd starting Richards came flashing by and “that was all she wrote” for the top spot. Richards cruised from there slipping through traffic with abandon. Southers, Dozier and the surprisingly competitive Johnny Reeves followed Richards across the line. Richards convincing run to the flag also earned him the Contingency Connection bonus this week amounting to some $1250 in contingency awards in addition to the $1000 he won in posted purse awards.

Myers’ mechanical woes combined with Dozier’s solid 3rd place finish put Dozier in the point lead by 14 markers. The most surprising aspect of this year’s Wingless Warrior point battle is that Richards is tied for 3rd only 24 points out of the lead. What makes this more interesting is that Richards was DQ’d from race #2 when his car did not pass tech. In the last 3 events Richards has come within a single point of earning the maximum. Richards has garnered 179 points in 3 events. With Mason Myers suffering a similar mechanical fate as brother Cody, Josh Vieira parlayed a nice victory in his heat race and a 7th in the feature into a competitive 6th place in the point standings.

At this writing, the Brown’s Valley RV Wingless Warrior Sprint Car Series remains the highest paying weekly wingless spec sprint win in California.

Remember, our track gets $150,000 worth of contingency dollars for our winged and wingless sprint cars annually. The way it works is that Contingency Connection has signed up over 200 sponsors nationwide (including Exxon/Mobil 1) who contribute products or merchandise each race to the winner. The only catch is that drivers must be sporting the decal of that sponsor to earn the bonus. If a driver who wins the MRP Winged or Browns Valley RV Wingless feature race has every decal on his car, he could receive some $1250 in products or merchandise. The vouchers can be saved and traded in for larger ticket items. The bonus is a healthy addition to the weekly $1,000 promoter Hawes already pays to the winner of MRP winged sprint car main events and the $1000 he pays to the Browns Valley wingless sprint car feature winners. You must be a member of the association, but you can become a member at any event throughout the year.

A stirring finish punctuated a great feature event in the MRP Mighty Mini Stock main. Jason Clayton’s early grip on the action was wrestled away by a highflying James Foster. Foster who has used his right foot do the talking lately sailed into the lead. As the event quickly headed to its conclusion it became obvious that Brent Hall had other ideas as to who should win the hardware. Misty Castleberry stayed in the lead duo’s wake until the end. But, on the last lap Hall decided it was win it or wear it time and threw his #22 at the turn 3 banking. He almost made it, but Foster stayed in it hard and won the drag race to the flag. It was another fendered thriller. Foster jumped past point leader Joel Giusti and now leads that division by 5 points.

Willis (yep that’s his real name) Horn provided the most popular victory celebration of the night and probably the most effective mosquito abatement program in the history of the raceway. Willie, as he is known, seemingly carrying 50 gallons of oil, smoked on and used it all perfectly to pick up a great feature event win.

With 2 more contestants showing up with sprint car top wings (now 3) that trio went quicker. Auburn’s Ray Trimble with his wing flashing through the night air got on the horse and rode away from the field right away. Horn got to 2nd early, but the car was smoking badly. All eyes were on Cort Dozier in one of his 3 feature starts of the night. Dozier started in the back and came forward relentlessly. He finally wound up 2nd.

While Trimble lead he was the class of the field. Nobody was going to catch him. Then it all came unraveled for the quick chauffer just past ½ way as he lost it in turn 2. He took a lazy slide into the infield.

After that it was all Wild Willie. The checkers flew over Horn, Dozier and Cory Hall to end this one. Trimble recovered with a fine 4th after his turn 2 miscue. Trimble is a pleasant surprise this year and has been competitive from the time he showed up a few weeks ago.

The new Pro 4 Sprints got another lesson in how to get around MRP from point leader Tim Maclaughlin. It took awhile for Maclaughlin to catch early leader Denmark Juan. But, once camped on Juan’s tail, it was only a matter of time. MacLaughlin won another convincing victory. Action of note in this one included a charge from the back by eventual 3rd place finisher Jeremy Hawes.

Next week the MRP Winged Sprint Cars, the Brown’s Valley RV Wingless Warrior Sprint Car Series will present open wheel action. The Mighty Mini Stocks and Prime Time Pizza EXTREME BOMBERS will draw the curtain on this one.

MRP will continue to offer it’s own form of the Economic Stimulus Plan by offering admission prices from the past all year long. The spectator gates open at 5PM with hot laps and qualifying at 6PM. This Saturday the races will start promptly after qualifying. Get there early. The pit gate opens at 3PM.
