Richards repeats as McDaniel and Stinson also triumph
by Bob Burbach
MAY 10, 2009 - Marysville, CA --- Tony Richards of Paradise grabbed his second consecutive feature event win in the Brown’s Valley RV Wingless Warrior Sprint Car Series at Paul and Kathy Hawes Marysville Raceway Park Saturday. Marysville’s Randy McDaniel dominated the Western Modified portion of the show and local businessman Neil “The Pizza Man” Stinson romped to victory in the Nor Cal Dwarf car main.

Richards was flawless in his 2nd victory this year after 6 feature triumphs last year. Richards jumped into an early lead after the crowd was hushed by a scary flip in turn 1 on the original start. Brandon Burd and Brandon Dozier got together at the entrance of turn 1 and Burd’s car popped into the air after getting one of Dozier’s wheels. Burd took a couple of vicious hits on the cage as the car flipped wildly coming to rest near the 1st turn crashwall. It was a long few minutes before rescue workers freed Burd from the wreckage. When he got out he walked to the ambulance under his own power.

The restart saw Richards get to the lead right away bringing Cort Dozier and Brian Southers with him. Grass Valley’s Billy Wallace had to start at the rear of the field when his yellow #6W apparently refused to fire as the wingless cars were presented. Wallace got up on the wheel and started a banzai charge to the front that had everyone on their feet. Wallace would eventually race to an 8th place finish after getting as high as 4th. With but a handful of laps remaining, Wallace could not get by 4th running Jeremy Hawes and decided to try a couple of wild high side moves that, in the end cost him a few positions.

Richards and Dozier had it pretty much their own way through the course of this event but there was a heated battle going on from 3rd through about 6th during the latter stages of this event. Southers, Hawes and point leader Mason Meyers slugged it out in a very entertaining struggle for the 3rd place dough. When Wallace showed up it got even better.

Southers eventually prevailed in his bid for 3rd as Hawes and Meyers finished under a blanket in 4th and 5th respectively.

With the exception of Burd’s crash the Brown’s Valley RV Wingless Warrior Sprint Car Series’ heat races and feature were ultra competitive and they ran off their events in quick order. Richards, Wallace and Dozier won the heats.

Local hero Randy McDaniel dominated the Mighty Modified portion of the show; at least on paper. It was a knock down-drag it out affair on a wicked fast surface however that got the crowd’s attention. Watching these rocket fast cars paw their way around the MRP clay was awe-inspiring.

Oregon’s Dave Duste lead early before McDaniel took over the top spot with a nifty move off of turn 2. Duane Cleveland swept into 2nd a few laps later and appeared to be the only car capable of staying with McDaniel. Duste lost 3rd to Ryan McDaniel shortly thereafter as the black #10 tried to reel in the leaders. But Randy McDaniel and Cleveland would be left to settle it amongst themselves. A late race charge by Cleveland fell short as Randy McDaniel took another checkered flag at MRP.

McDaniel and Duste won the two very competitive heat races.

Stinson got an early jump on everyone in the Nor Cal Dwarf Car field and went to the checkers without looking back. If he had, he’d have been impressed. Early race moves by Kevin Bender and Mike Grenert got them into Stinson’s wake. Bender was on a tear as he’s long overdue in victory lane.

Round about ½ way Grenert scared everyone in the place when his right rear tire exploded and his red #12 biked, BIG TIME, as he slid into turn 1. Grenert saved it but the car came off the ground and Grenert skyed the motor. The rev-limiter kept the motor from becoming garbage and Grenert rejoined the field after replacing the tire.

Grenert was on fire after that and wound up 5th after a great charge. Bender never could quite get past Stinson. But, the last laps were thrillers as Bender nearly stood his quick #9n on its nose trying to get by Stinson. Ryan Winter finished a close 3rd with Pat Weger in 4th.

Winter and former Nor Cal champ, Bryan Quilty grabbed heat race honors.

The crowd filed out at about 9:30 after the 2nd edition of the Prime Time Pizza EXTREME BOMBERS capped the night’s action. The race itself left only 3 of the 18 entrants still running after 10 mind-numbing, sensory ripping laps of mechanical mayhem, but a great time was had by all.

Next week the MRP Winged Sprint Cars, the Brown’s Valley RV Wingless Warrior Sprint Car Series and the Pro 4 Sprint Cars will present open wheel action. The Mighty Mini Stocks and the MRP Super Stocks will round out the 5-division show. All 5 of MRP’s primary divisions will be featured this coming Saturday night.

MRP will continue to offer it’s own form of the Economic Stimulus Plan by offering admission prices from the past all year long. The spectator gates open at 5PM with hot laps and qualifying at 6PM. This Saturday the races will start promptly after qualifying. Get there early. The pit gate opens at 3PM.
