$print and $tock opens bookend ambitious 2009 schedule at MRP
by Bob Burbach

(JANUARY 14, 2009 - Marysville, CA) --- With the whine of heavy equipment working in the background promoter Paul Hawes has penned and released the 2009 schedule of events for Marysville Raceway Park. A series of special open events will open and cap the 41st season at the newly reconfigured clay oval.

Marysville Raceway Park will host the first special event of the season for Winged 360 Sprinters and Wingless Spec Sprinters on March 7th. The inaugural running of the Spring Sprint Car Open will set into motion the most ambitious race schedule in the history of this storied facility. The Spring Sprint Open will pay a whopping $2500 to win in the 30-lap winged sprint car finale. It will also pay a cool grand to the winner in the companion 30-lap wingless spec sprint feature. The winged feature will pay $150 to start and the wingless feature will pay $125 to start.

The cream of the crop in open wheel racing will be at MRP trying out first hand what has been the talk of the racing community in northern California. The impressive improvements at MRP include wider and faster turns and wider banked straights that will allow racers to really stay on the hammer. Promoter Hawes has made major safety improvements as he has labored to create the most competitive raceway in the west. “Competitive” is the operative word here. While the speeds will likely be up measurably, the ability of open wheel cars to race side by side, three wide, has been achieved. With 70 ft wide turns (Indianapolis Motor Speedway has 80 ft wide turns) promoter Hawes is getting high praise from sprint car veterans who have tested the new configuration.

A playday on March 14th will separate the Spring Sprint Car Open from the 2nd Annual Great Taxi Cab Open scheduled for March 21st. 4 divisions of fendered madness will stage a one night stand that featured over 130 entrants last time out. The Mighty Modifieds and the Pro Stocks will headline the program with both divisions paying $1000 to win. The always competitive Pure Stocks will put on a complete program with $500 going to the winner. The MRP Mini Stocks will also appear in a non points event that will likely bring nearly 40 entrants in this one division alone.

The weekly swirl of the ultra competitive point season starts on April 4th. Multiple divisions will test the new clay every week in thrilling side by side action. The 2nd Annual MRP Race Car Show will be hosted by Les Schwab Tire Co earlier in the day. Participation in the car show is worth 50 championship points. Dozens of racers who are chasing championship points will have their bright new beauties on display from 11AM until about 3 when everyone tows their cars to the track.

The Contingency Connection will continue to throw in some $1100 in added bonuses to the winners in both the sprint car divisions weekly. Yep, that's $2200 total. This is in addition to the posted prize money at the weekly shows.

The traveling Western All Stars Late Models will make a stop at MRP in June pitting some of the nation’s finest Late Model Stock Car drivers against some serious local professionals. Look for a real “King of the Hill” atmosphere for this one.

Late season 2 day open wheel shows for both winged and wingless sprint cars are featured in October. The 2nd Stock Car Spectacular and Bomber Trailer Race Regatta will put a period on the 2009 schedule Halloween night!!!

In between, the 10th Annual Mel Hall Memorial Race, the 2nd Cy Francis Memorial Race, the 2nd Fallen Racers Memorial and the 2nd NARC Reunion will be featured remembering MRP’s remarkable history. Kid’s Night and Fan Appreciation Night have also been placed on the schedule. Other traditional events will include the 2008 West Coast Dwarf Car Nationals in September and Yuba City Scrap and Steel’s 9th Ice Cream Night in August. Also in August Mike Hall’s Dairy Queen Restaurant of Yuba City will continue with his tradition of Dilly Bar Night. The 6th Taco Bell Night is also on the card.

The aforementioned events are but a part of the great racing programs that will be presented weekly at MRP. Please consult the website and click on the “Race Schedule” button for a complete current schedule. Check it often as new special events are being negotiated and added.

If you haven’t seen the track lately…just go. It’s worth the drive to see the distinctive results of promoter Hawes’ [and his remarkable staff’s] efforts. If you are a racer or a fan, drop on by and say hi. Promoter Hawes is right there and is eager for your input. This is one very friendly place to race.
