Charles Davis Jr. Takes Hollywood Hills Speedway Finale
24 May 2009
Bob Ingram / Beth Hazlewood
Hollywood Hills Speedway @ Casino Hollywood, San Felipe Pueblo, New Mexico. The scheduled two-day Buddy Taylor Memorial saw a rainout on Saturday and a one day show bringing an end to Hollywood Hills Speedway as the track will be closed due to unsafe structures at the facility. A trio of Arizona drivers took wins in Sprints, Midgets and Mini-Sprints. However, Mike Visser from Cottonwood Arizona who took the checkered flag in first position in the Mini-Sprints was disqualified after the races for not making the required weight. A total of 86 open wheel racers were on hand to bid farewell to HHS with some terrific racing in all three divisions.

The Traditional Non-Wing Sprints had 36 cars to run 4 heats, a B-Main and a 30 lap Main-Event. The Main-Event saw outside second and third row starters Charles Davis Jr. and Rick Ziehl wage a race long battle for the win. The early laps saw the #16 of Yuma Arizona driver Mike Martin who had won the last time he ran at HHS tangle with another car in turn one sending him on a hard rollover that ended his night. A few laps later while leading the race, the #21 of Stockton, California driver Johnathan Henry got a tad bit too high in turn 3 and caught the berm sending him side over side a couple of times. Henry was able to get his mount back on its wheels and restart at the rear of the field but was only able to make a couple of laps before retiring to the pits. With the departure of Martin and Henry the battle was on between Davis and Ziehl with Bob Ream Jr., R.J. Johnson and Jesse Baker working their way through the field to take the 3rd, 4th and 5th spots in a very fast and exciting race. The B-Main had 20 drivers fighting for only 4 transfer spots to the Main-Event. At the checkered flag it was local teenage drivers Josh Hodges and Derrik Ortega taking the top two spots with the father and son duo of Bo and Jesse Baker taking the final transfers. On the last lap, hard luck driver Kelly Denison took a very hard tumble in turn 4. Denison had suffered a devastating crash early last year that kept him out of competition for the remainder of the year. Fortunately all drivers who were involved in crashes were not injured. Heat race wins went to #16 Mike Martin, #62 Stevie Sussex, #21 Johnathan Henry and #50 Charles Davis Jr.

The Midgets making their first and only appearance at HHS this year had a very strong field of 24 cars to run 3 heat races and their 30 lap Main-Event. The Main-Event saw the #51 of Arizona’s R.J. Johnson and the #2 of Colorado’s Luke Icke wage a race long battle for the win. This race was a battle of Arizona and Colorado drivers as Johnson took the win over Icke with the #71 of Colorado’s Keith Rauch taking third, Arizona driver #12jr Nathan High in 4th and another Colorado driver #14 Tony Rossi taking the 5th spot. The 3 heat race went green to checkered with no caution periods to slow the action. Heat race wins went to the #2 of Icke, #51 Johnson and the #48 of Rio Rancho New Mexico’s Michael Marfia.

The smallest of the open wheel racers, the Mini-Sprints had a great field of 26 cars for their 3 heat races and their Main-Event. The Main-Event saw Cottonwood Arizona driver #16 Mike Visser jump out to a fairly large lead over the field with the father and son duo of Mike and Kenny Brewer who had won the last two Mini-Sprint shows at HHS working their way through the field and giving chase to Visser. At the checkered flag it was Visser with youngster Kenny Brewer and dad Mike in the top three spots. However, after the race the Visser car failed tech and was DQ’d giving the win to the younger Brewer. Filling out the top five spots were the #23W of Adam Mollenkopf and the #91 of Clint Miller. Both Mollenkopf and Miller had one of their best races of the year.

Have A Great Day
God Bless Everybody
