Hollywood Hills Speedway @ Casino Hollywood, San Felipe Pueblo, New Mexico. The NMMRA Traditional Non-Wing Sprint Cars made their first appearance of the year at Hollywood Hills Speedway on Saturday night. The Sprints brought a very nice field of 27 drivers to contend for the $1000.00 to win Main Event. The Sprinters were joined on the program by the Street Stocks, Mini-Sprints and Cruisers for a great night of racing in all four divisions. The track was in excellent shape and had side-by-side racing from the drop of the first green flag to the last checkered. New track promoters Benji Lyons and Kevin Montgomery along with track manager Steve Dunn with the help of new Director of Competition Tre Brewbaker did a great job of getting the races started within 5 minutes of the scheduled start time and ending the program by 10:30.
The 27 Sprints on hand ran 3 heats, a B-Main and a 25 lap Main-Event. Heat #1 saw Arizona driver Mike Martin in the #16AZ take a close win over the #33 of Ronnie Smith with 2008 ASCS Rocky Mountain Winged Champion Derrik Ortega coming home in 3rd position. Heat #2 had the #40X of Scott Box in his beautiful new blue car take the victory over teenager Joshua ( The Jet ) Hodges with Grants, N.M. racer Jesse Baker in the #22 taking 3rd spot. Heat #3 saw another teenager from the ASCS Rocky Mountain Series, #77 Colt Treharn take the win over the #7 of Rick Johnson and the #71 of Tim West. West who turned 40 years old this week was in the second Dave Burns car instead of his usual #11W. One of the stories on the night was Jerill Higginbotham driving the #50 of his dad Jerry Higginbotham. Higginbotham was making his last race for a while, as he will be shipping out to Iraq next week. The B-Main had 10 cars fighting for 4 transfer spots to the Main-Event. Kelly Denison in the #9X who had a huge crash last year and missed most of the year took the win over returning driver #2 Steve Nix with the #8 of J.C. Powell and the #50 of Higginbotham filling out the transfer spots. The 25 lap Main-Event saw several yellow flags and a red flag that kept the action close to the very end. Phoenix Arizona driver Mike Martin kept jumping out to a good lead only to have cautions bring the field up to him. Most notably among Martin’s challengers were the teenage duo of Treharn and Ortega as they both kept Martin honest by hounding him to the checkered flag. At the checkered it was Martin, Treharn and Ortega followed by the #40X of Box and the #22M of Baker. There was a very scary moment as the #78 of Jody Williams took a very hard tumble just short of the flagstand. Williams was able to exit his damaged mount but was limber legged and wobbly headed for a while. Williams plans on repairing the car and racing in Tucson next weekend.
The Street Stocks had 14 cars on hand tonight, down a couple from last week’s opener. Heat #1 saw a race long battle between the #76 of Mike Ford Jr. and the M7 of Cameron Martin. In the end Ford was able to hold off Martin with the #39 of ex-asphalt racer Dave Carrell coming home in the 3rd spot. Heat #2 had another of the Ford brothers, Kenny in the #77 take the win over the #1 of Ronnie Bell with the #5X of Rick Boelter taking the 3rd position. The 15 lap Main-Event looked like a replay of the first heat as the #76 of Ford and the M7 of Martin battled for the win with Ford beating Martin to the stripe by a few feet. Ford & Martin were chase home by the #42 of Glenn Jaramillo, #619 Lalo Saenz and the #77 of Kenny Ford. Kenny Ford in the #77 won last weeks Main-Event in a brand new car but got caught up in a early tangle with the #1 of Ronnie Bell that saw their bumpers get locked together causing both to enter the pits. Ford was able to return for a top five finish but ended the night for Bell who was a challenger all night long.
The Mini-Sprints were making their first appearance of the year at HHS with 20 cars in the pits. Tonight could easily have been called “Brewer Night” as the father and son tandem of Mike & Kenny Brewer won their respective heat races and finished 1st and 2nd in the Main-Event. Mike filled in a couple of times last year for the #72 of Bruce Hosea but Kenny did not race at all last year. You could not tell that these two had missed a day as they were pretty much dominate in every race. Heat #1 saw daddy Mike in the #38 take the win over the #24 of regular sprint-car driver Tim West with the #71 of Jory Higginbotham coming home in 3rd. Heat #2 saw the #45 of youngster Kenny Brewer take the win over another young gun in the form of Austin Mansfield in the #57 with the #224 of older brother and sprint car driver Cody Mansfield coming home in the 3rd position. The 20 lap Main-Event had youngster Mike Brewer in the #45 take the win over daddy #38 Mike Brewer. Chasing the Brewer’s to the line were the #24 of West, the #68 of Brian Perea and the #23W of Adam Mollendopf.
The Cruisers had a somewhat surprisingly short field of only 16 cars after having 23 cars last week for opening day at HHS. These mostly novice racers with little or no experience were able to run their races with very few caution periods. Heat #1 was won by the #30 of Delbert Chavez with the #72 of Gerald Heckwine and the #59 of Jessie Lynch coming home in the 3rd position. Heat #2 had the prettiest of all Cruisers #90 Mike Sullivan taking the win over the #5 of the BIG RED station wagon of Randy Combs with the #76 of Robert Moharter coming home 3rd. If anyone is interested in finding out what it is like to race in the Cruiser class, Combs in the #5 is offering ride-alongs in the passenger seat for $50.00 a night. See Randy Combs in the pits after the races to make arrangements. The 15 lap Main-Event had the #90 of Sullivan take the win over last weeks winner #11 Greg Nidel. Chasing Sullivan and Nidel to the checkered flag was the #30 of Chavez with #5 Combs and #76 Moharter filling out the top five positions.
The beautiful and FAST Late Models of #59 Alan Bowers, #96 Joe Smithberger, #69 John Aragon and the #2M of Richard Johnson made several hot laps during a brief break in the action tonight to give fans a glimpse of what they will see next Saturday night at HHS.
Please come out and join us next week at Hollywood Hills Speedway when the Rio Grande Super Late Models make their first appearance of the year. Joining the Late Models will be the UMP West Modifieds, Mini-Sprints, Hobby Stocks and Cruisers.
Have A Great Day
God Bless Everybody
