Wes Gutierrez Looks Strong in USAC/CRA Event with 360 Power

Tulare, CA - (May 30, 2009) – San Martin's Wes Gutierrez piloted the Rod Styles owned Styles Motorsports No. 007 Maxim at the Tulare Thunderbowl to do battle with the stars of the USAC/CRA Non-Winged Sprint Car Series.
Gutierrez may have been down on horsepower as he had a 360 power plant in the car. But, he more than made up for the lack of horsepower with heart. The event would be the young mashers first race with the series. However, Gutierrez is no stranger to the Non-Winged ranks. He has run competitively in Spec-Sprint, Bandit and West Coast 360 Sprint Car competition. He finished a solid second in West Coast 360 Sprint Car action at Santa Maria Speedway back on April 25th.
The young lion started his impressive evening by qualifying 12th out of the 24 car field turning a 15.527 lap. His qualifying effort put him ahead of the likes of Cory Kruseman, Danny Faria, Jr., Tyler Brown and a host of others with the 360.
In his 10-lap heat race, Gutierrez settled into his fourth starting position. When the green flag came out, Wes immediately went to work running the top of the racetrack. The Styles Motorsports No. 007 was hooked up and flying on the tacky speedway. Gutierrez and Mike Spencer got into a slugfest with Wes eventually crossing the line in the second spot in front of Spencer, Danny Faria, Jr., and Danny Sheridan.
The 30-lap feature event was up next for the 18-year-old. This race would be a true test for the young shoe. He would start from the 11th position. When Willie Williams dropped the green flag, without hesitation, Gutierrez got his elbows up and started his charge forward. With a major disadvantage facing against him power wise, Wes drove smart, but he ran as hard as he could every lap to keep from getting passed by those with the more powerful bullets.
Wes pulled off some crafty moves on the tacky surface. He worked his way up to the sixth position and was looking for more, when he came up lame in turn-2 due to a flat right front tire. He went to the pits and the team changed the tire, but weren't allowed back out, ending his exciting run.
"I had a blast running out there! I'm really excited that we ran as good as we did with the 360," the excited Gutierrez said after the race. "I can't forget my sponsors. I would never be able to do this without all of them. I can't begin to explain the rush that I got when I passed Damion Gardner. He's one of the best that there is, and that was such a great feeling."
