Brandon Davis beats out strong Petaluma Speedway field for first win of season
By Gary Thomas

Petaluma, CA – June 7, 2009…With a solid field of 30 wingless sprint cars on hand at the Petaluma Speedway Rohnert Park's Brandon Davis held off all challengers and drove to his first victory of the 2009 racing season on Saturday night aboard the Dave Johnson owned No. 32 machine.

Davis, who won the Silver Dollar Speedway wingless sprint car championship in 2007, spent much of last season running a winged sprint car, but has come back this year to the wingless ranks on a more full-time basis driving for car owner Dave Johnson with sponsorship from Johnson Custom Machine, Hettrich Construction, Northbay Welding and Sparky's Collision Center.

Davis had put together a consistent season up till this point and was very happy to get into victory lane for the first time on Saturday night. "It feels great to finally get a win this year," Davis said. "It's been a pretty solid season for us, but we definitely wanted to get a victory and to get it tonight with this great field of cars here is pretty cool."

The 20 year-old racer was one of four drivers to break the existing wingless spec sprint track record to begin the night and started the feature from the front row. At the waving of the green flag he settled into second behind early leader Devon Ostheimer, but it didn't take him long to move into the top spot as he charged into the lead on lap three. The hooked-up 3/8 mile clay oval made for some tough conditions, but Davis was able to use the high line to pick his way through the slower lapped traffic.

The remaining circuits of the 20 lap feature saw Davis sit out front for the duration and hold off a strong late race challenge from Tracy's Matt Streeter to drive off and take his first checkered flag of the '09 season. "Devon got me on the start of the race and he went to the bottom going into turn one, so I just blasted the top and it worked pretty good so I stayed up there," said Davis, who also captured Petaluma Speedway's "Run What You Brung" show last year. "The track was really fast and rough tonight, but we had the car working awesome so it made things a lot easier for me."

Davis this season has also been running at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico and currently sits fourth in the Joe Hunt Magnetos/Feather Falls Casino track standings. "I just have to thank my car owner Dave Johnson and the team for giving me the opportunity to come and run the car this season," Davis said. "I definitely think we're going to be in for a great rest of the year and just can't wait to get back on the track because I have a lot of confidence right now."

The wingless sprints will have an extended period of time off at the Silver Dollar Speedway however, before resuming action at the newly resurfaced track on Friday night July 3. Davis currently sits 20 points behind leader Jimmy Pettit as he searches for his second track title. "We've been fast in Chico this year, but have had a bit of bad luck so we're looking forward to getting back up there," commented Davis, who won six main events at SDS during his championship year in '07.
