Tulare, Calif…(May 30, 2009) Matt Mitchell, Yorba Linda, Calif., led all 30-laps in his J.W. Mitchell / Mancha Realtors No. 37 Maxim Saturday at the Thunderbowl Raceway to earn his first career Lucas Oil USAC/CRA sprint car victory. Mitchell’s win also provided the series with its seventh different winner in seven races this year.
Despite the box score, Mitchell’s wire-to-wire win was anything but easy. Numerous caution periods and several challenges for the lead kept Mitchell’s victory in doubt until the final corner of the race.
Coming down to receive the white flag, Mitchell had Peter Murphy nipping at his tail-tank and Cory Kruseman, Ventura, Calif., within striking distance of both drivers. Looking to the high-side of Mitchell through turn-one, something suddenly broke on Murphy’s car.
As the Australian driver began to slow to a stop, Kruseman carried the momentum from a superior run off the second corner into the third turn. Kruseman pulled even with the leader for a moment, but could only watch a Mitchell sped off the turn-four cushion towards the checkered flag.
Thanks to some clever maneuvers, as well as plenty of attrition, Kruseman’s runner-up finish from the 12th starting spot gave him and his Kruseman Motorsports / Lucas Oil No. 21k Viper the “Hard Charger” award for the race.
Blake Miller, Yorba Linda, Calif., lowered his previous one-lap track record mark in time trials and went on to finish third in the Jeff Gardner / Roy Miller Freightlines No. 93 Sled. Miller’s podium run also put him at the top of the Lucas Oil USAC/CRA point standings.
Following Miller across the finish line in fourth was Garrett Hansen of Manhattan Beach, Calif., driving the M-M Motorsports / Roy Miller Freightlines No. 7 Maxim. David Cardey, Riverside, Calif., started the race in eighth position before giving his Glenn Crossno / ITI Performance No. 38 Viper a fifth-place finish.
