SHORT, ROBINSON, AND PEEDEN VISIT BLOOMINGTON SPEEDWAY VICTORY LANE
By: Chris Nunn

BLOOMINGTON, IND.-JUNE 19, 2009- Temperatures soared into the mid 90's on Friday night, making for a hot and humid evening at the Bloomington Speedway. The hot temperatures couldn't deter drivers and fans from showing up at the Bloomington Speedway for KIVA Networking Night. 33 Safety Kleen Sprint Cars, 14 O'Neal Wood Products UMP Modifieds, and 21 Tire and Wheel Center UMP Super Stocks made up the racing program for the evening. For the Safety Kleen Sprint Cars, drivers used this race as a tuneup for the upcoming 21st Annual “Sheldon Kinser Memorial” event that will be run on Friday night June 26th. That event will pay $3,000 to win; $300 to start, plus lap prize money.

Brady Short and Danny Holtsclaw made up the front row for the 25 lap Safety Kleen Sprint Car main event, as Short led lap one. Jeff Bland Jr got around Holtsclaw for second at the line. Chad Boat then moved around Bland to take the runner up spot on lap two. On lap four, Boat shot around Short to take the point, as Short made a dive low to grab it back. The duo ran side by side for two laps until the caution flew on lap six for debris in turn one. Before the caution, Jesse Cramer and Bland were dicing it out side by side for the third spot. On the restart, Bland shot under Boat to grab second going into turn one. As this was happening, Short padded his lead to over a half straightaway over Bland. Holtsclaw began to move his way back up, as he battled with Boat for the third position. Holtsclaw grabbed the spot as the field completed lap ten. At the halfway mark, it was Short, Bland, Holtsclaw, Boat, and Cramer making completing the top five. On lap 14, Short's lead had grown to a full straightaway over Bland and Holtsclaw. Back in the top five, Casey Shuman moved to the fifth position, getting around Cramer, bringing Jon Sciscoe with him to sixth. Up front, Short began lapping cars, putting two backmarkers between he and Bland. With five to go, Short enjoyed well over a full straightaway lead over Bland, and just had to stay out of trouble. Staying out of trouble looked easy for Short, as he cruised to a decisive victory over Bland, Holtsclaw, Cramer, and Shuman. The Sprint Mart Hard Charger award went to Jon Sciscoe, who started 12th and finished 7th. The win was Short's fourth of the year. He is sponsored by Indiana Stoneworks, Short Trucking, Simpson, and Athenia Mason Supply

Safety Kleen Sprint Car heats were won by Danny Holtsclaw, Casey Shuman, Jesse Cramer, and Chad Boat. The B-Main went to Mark Perry III

Winston Howe and Brad Cummings made up the front row for the 25 lap Tire and Wheel Center UMP Super Stock main event with Cummings leading lap one. Howe fell into second with Steve Peeden third. The caution would fly on lap two, as Justin Hammond spun off the turn two banking. Cummings darted out to a four car length advantage over Howe as the green flew on the restart. On lap four, Peeden worked under Howe to grab the second position, as Jason Thomas and Ben Dubois battled for fourth. Thomas grabbed fourth as the top five ran single file at lap seven. Up front, Peeden was closing the gap between he and Cummings, as the lead was only two car lengths for Cummings. On lap 11, Peeden moved to the topside of Cummings and attempted a pass for the lead. Cummings held his line, and kept Peeden at bay. At the halfway point, it was Cummings, Peeden, Howe, Thomas, and Dubois making up the top five. Contact between the leaders on lap 14, caused Peeden to drop back just a little from Cummings rear end. Peeden, however, used the lapped car of Hammond to take the lead on lap 16, as they went three wide with the lapped car. Cummings dove back to the bottom, and made a move on Peeden on lap 19 for the lead. Peeden kept the advantage as they took the two to go signal. With four to go, the gap between Peeden and Cummings sat at less than two car lengths. The lead remained the same for Peeden, as he took the white flag. Cummings could not catch up, however, as Peeden scored his first career victory at the Bloomington Speedway. Rounding out the top five were Cummings, Howe, Thomas, and Dubois. Peeden, a Paragon, IN native is sponsored by Darlene Robinson/Remax Realty, Townsend Transmission, Drapalik Surveying & Engineering, Davis Automotive, and Butler Grafix.

Tire and Wheel Center UMP Super Stock heats went to Steve Peeden, Tom Ault, and Brad Cummings

The 25 lap O'Neal Wood Products UMP Modified main event would see Richie Lex and Kent Robinson on the front row. The initial start would be waved off, as Chris Martin spun in turn two. On the second attempt, Robinson took the lead and led lap one ahead of Lex and John Demoss. Clint Demoss looked to make it three wide with Josh Eads and John Demoss for third, but had to back off. Eads then looked under John Demoss for the third spot, but was unable to make the pass. John Demoss then moved to the topside and took second away from Lex. Eads also was able to move around Lex to take third. Eads and John Demoss battled side by side on lap seven for the second position, with Eads able to get around. The caution flew on lap eight, as David Lawson spun in turn one. When racing resumed, Robinson maintained his lead by three car lengths over Eads as they completed lap ten. Eads poked his nose under Robinson on lap eleven, but Robinson was able to hold him off. At the halfway point, it was Robinson, Eads, John Demoss, Clint Demoss, and Lex completing the top five. With ten to go, the top four had put some distance between they and the fifth place running Lex. The yellow flew once again on lap 16, as Phil Vansant spun in turn three. As lightning began to flash in the western skies, the field took the green with just nine laps to go, with Robinson leading Eads and John Demoss. Behind the leaders, Brad Barrow moved into the top five, getting around Lex. Disaster would strike John Demoss on lap 18, as he broke coming out of turn four, resulting in a caution. With seven laps to go, the green flew on the restart, with Robinson at the point. The car on the move was the one of Barrow, who shot to the highside and moved around Eads for second on lap 19. Eads battled back, but could not get the spot with five laps to go. While Eads and Barrow duked it out for second, Robinson began to pull away. With three laps to go, Eads moved back under Barrow for second. Robinson took the white flag and held on to take the win, about five car lengths ahead of Eads, Barrow, Clint Demoss, and Lex. Robinson, a Bloomington native is sponsored by JB Salvage, Universal Products and Services, Bob Pierce Race Cars, and Hovis Racing Engines
