Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (April 7, 2009) – Winged versus non-winged, it's a common debate among Sprint Car racing aficionados. And those drivers that can excel in both forms are a somewhat rare breed.
Now, those in Arizona and New Mexico will find out exactly which drivers can stand the true test of versatility with the Discount Tire Co. ASCS Wing vs. Non-Wing Challenge Series.
The Discount Tire Co. ASCS Wing vs. Non-Wing Challenge Series will consist of eight nights of competition already included on the ASCS Canyon (non-wing) and ASCS Southwest (wing) schedules. Points will be tallied from those selected events to determine the Challenge champion.
The Discount Tire Co. also offers up $3,000 in bonus money for the top-five point earners in the Challenge, with $1,2000 earmarked for the Challenge champion. The runner-up will receive $600, with the balance of the top five in Challenge points receiving $500, $400 and $300.
One hundred percent participation is required to be eligible for the bonus money. If fewer than five drivers compete in all eight scheduled events, the remaining money will be distributed among those drivers eligible.
The Discount Tire Co. ASCS Wing vs. Non-Wing Challenge Series is set to kick off with the ASCS Canyon Region's Buddy Taylor Memorial at New Mexico's Hollywood Hills Speedway on May 23-24, a wingless event that is paired with two nights of Midget racing competition.
Several drivers have already crossed over in early season action by running both winged and non-wing events including Charles Davis, Jr., (ASCS Canyon Region points leader and tied for fourth in ASCS Southwest points), Mike Martin (tied for fourth in Southwest points) and Ronnie Clark (tied for fourth in Canyon points and sixth in Southwest points).
