One Last Hurrah – ASCS Canyon Region Brings Curtain Down on Manzanita
|
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (April 6, 2009) – Fifty-eight years of history will likely be finalized this Saturday night when the Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region takes to Manzanita Speedway's ½-mile clay oval in Phoenix, AZ, for the Donnie Davis Memorial.
Saturday night's card marks the final event in the track's storied history, as the land upon which the track sits has been sold and will cease operations following Saturday's event.
Charles Davis, Jr., who currently sits atop the ASCS Canyon Region point charts, topped the final wingless Sprint Car event on the track's 1/3-mile on March 21 and will try to match the same feat on the famed big track this weekend. Johnny Herrera reached victory lane in the final winged Sprint Car event on the 1/3-mile this past weekend.
With the initial two ASCS Canyon Region events of 2009 in the books, two-time series runner-up Davis is out to the early lead on the strength of his March 21 victory and a third-place showing in the March 7 opener.
Davis, with a dozen career ASCS Canyon Region feature wins to his credit, holds a 12-point lead over Stockton, CA, shoe Johnathon Henry, with Nathan High third in the early portion of the title chase.
Ronnie Clark and Andrew Reinbold enter the weekend tied for fourth, with the balance of the current top ten including R.J. Johnson, Bryan Swinehart, Jeff Slinkard and Bernie Smith, with Josh Pelkey and Thomas Ogle tied for tenth.
After consecutive DNF's to open the season, two-time and reigning series champion Jeremy Sherman is still stuck on 99 career feature wins at Manzanita Speedway with just one more opportunity to reach the century mark.
Saturday's Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region action at Manzanita Speedway is set to go green at 7:00 p.m.
Manzanita Speedway is located in Phoenix, AZ, off I-10 Exit 141, then four miles south on 35th Avenue to West Broadway. For more information, contact the track at 602-276-7575.
The Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region is currently slated for nine nights of competition throughout Arizona and New Mexico in 2009.
The American Sprint Car Series, in its 18th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing events, brings the best of Sprint Car racing to nearly 100 different tracks throughout 25 states and Canada in 2009. Anchored by the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters, ASCS also consists of a dozen different Regions throughout the nation.
