Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (March 16, 2009) – As the storied Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, AZ, enters its final weeks, the Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region takes to the 1/3-mile clay oval for the final time this Saturday night.
Saturday's card marks just one of three ASCS events remaining at Manzanita Speedway. The winged forces of the ASCS Southwest Region will take to the 1/3-mile on April 4, while the Canyon Region will bring the curtains down with the Donnie Davis Memorial atop the ½-mile on April 11.
The ASCS Canyon Region opened the season on March 7 with Missouri's Jesse Hockett besting a 24-car field in the "Lealand Legacy" on Manzanita's 1/3-mile.
While Hockett beat California's Johnathon Henry and two-time points runner-up Charles Davis, Jr., in the tribute to Lealand McSpadden, two-time and reigning series champion Jeremy Sherman of Surprise, AZ, finished outside the top in series competition for the first time in 39 events dating back to 2007.
With 99 career feature wins at Manzanita according to Open Wheel Times data, Sherman has just two more ASCS Canyon tries to reach the century mark. "The Shermanator" has posted 26 series wins over the past two seasons, including 20 at Manzanita.
Saturday's Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region action at Manzanita Speedway is set to go green at 7:00 p.m.
Manzanita Speedway is located in Phoenix, AZ, off I-10 Exit 141, then four miles south on 35th Avenue to West Broadway. For more information, contact the track at 602-276-7575.
