ASCS Canyon Region Opens with Lealand Legacy Saturday Night
|
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (March 2, 2009) – The engines of the Discount Tire Co. American Sprint Car Series Canyon Region fire to life for the first time in 2009 this Saturday night as the series takes to Manzanita Speedway's 1/3-mile clay oval in Phoenix, AZ, for the "Lealand Legacy".
Saturday's card marks the first of nine non-winged ASCS Canyon Region events slated for Manzanita's 1/3-mile in 2009, with another handful scheduled for the ½-mile.
Saturday's season opener is a tribute to the legendary Lealand McSpadden, the Tempe, AZ, hotshoe that piled up in excess of 200 feature wins over the course of his career. A total of 117 of those wins came at Manzanita Speedway, according to Open Wheel Times data.
Closing in on McSpadden's Manzanita win total is two-time and defending ASCS Canyon Region champion Jeremy Sherman, who is just two triumphs shy of the century mark with 98 career victories atop the hallowed Manzanita clay.
Twenty of Sherman's Manzanita scores have occurred over the past two seasons of ASCS Canyon Region competition, with another half dozen victories at other venues running Sherman's series win total to 26. Last year, Sherman posted 14 wins in 27 tries en route to a second series title over Charles Davis, Jr.
Sherman, along with Mike Martin and Mike Leslie, is one of only three drivers that have competed in all 47 ASCS Canyon Region events contested over the past two seasons, with Leslie the only driver to take the green flag in all 47 main events. Sherman and Davis have started 46 of 47 features, with Martin and Andrew Reinbold next on the list with 44 feature starts apiece.
Saturday's Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region action at Manzanita Speedway is set to go green at 7:00 p.m.
Manzanita Speedway is located in Phoenix, AZ, off I-10 Exit 141, then four miles south on 35th Avenue to West Broadway. For more information, contact the track at 602-276-7575.
Rapidly establishing itself as one of the nation's premier non-wing Sprint Car series over the past two years, the Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region brings the best in non-wing Sprint Car racing to Arizona with a slate of 14 nights of action in 2009.
