VENTURA, Calif. (June 14, 2008) – Kevin Kierce got the jump early and took advantage of excellent restarts to win the Sprint Car main event at Ventura Raceway.
Josh Ford (of Camarillo) and others had several opportunities to challenge Kierce (Reseda) when the race restarted after caution periods. But each time the veteran smoothly pulled away from the field.
“I never in my life had a car that would run so well on the top as I did tonight,” Kierce said over the public address system.
The other winners included Palmdale’s Tyler Jerman (in the Junior Midgets), Santa Barbara’s Charlie Butcher (USAC Junior Focus Midgets), Tucson resident Alex Bowman (USAC Ford Focus Midgets) and Ford (USAC Midgets).
Ford’s bid to win two main events in one night started with a dominating performance in the Midgets feature. He was second, directly behind Kierce when the field restarted halfway through the 30-lap main event. But Ford was unable to get in front and eventually finished third.
“The midget was real good tonight and so was the sprint car,” Ford said. “How can you be upset with a win in the midget and a third in the sprinter?”
The victory was Kierce’s fourth out of 13 races so far in 2008 and it padded his already hefty lead in the championship standings.
Bowman’s win came after a scramble for the lead over the second half of the 20-lap race. Nick Carlson (Norwalk) took the lead with 16 laps completed, but a caution period relegated Carlson back to third place because the scoring reverted to the last complete lap before the caution came out.
Butcher’s win extended his lead in the Junior Focus standings to 1,830-1,615 over Tyler Edwards (Salina, OK). Brennan Rogers (Camarillo) now leads the Junior Midgets by a narrow 1,770-1,740 margin over Riley Helland (Ventura).
