NEWS, NOTES: VENTURA’S VARIETY ON DISPLAY SATURDAY

VENTURA, Calif. (April 29, 2008) – You might call it Something For Everybody Night at Ventura Raceway Saturday when the Seaside Park track hosts eight classes of racing. The classes include open wheelers, stock cars and replicars.
The scheduled classes include the Ventura Racing Association Sprint Cars, Senior Sprints, Dwarf Cars, Sport Compacts, Junior Midgets and Mini Dwarfs. The Dwarfs and Mini Dwarfs each have two age groups.
Because the VRA youth divisions include drivers as young as five and the Senior Dwarf and Senior Sprints classes both have drivers in their 70s, Ventura’s age spread is probably the widest in the nation most weekends.
The spectator gates open at 3 p.m. The VRA youth divisions start racing at 3:30 and the adult classes start at 5:30.
Raceway notes: The Raceway attracted 116 cars for the April 26 event. That’s the fourth time this season the car count has gone over 100…Johnathon Henry, the winner of the D’Angelos Sprint Car Shootout last weekend, is 17 years old. The previous week, the track had a 76-year old winner in the Senior Sprint Car class…Ventura’s Dave Revard, who drives in the VRA Senior Dwarf Car class, has raced so long that he remembers competing against the late NASCAR pioneer Lee Petty in a stock car race about half a century ago…Six main event winners last week left the track with the championship lead in their respective classes. Those drivers are Brian Saxton (Mentone), Brian Van Praag (Ventura), Charlie Butcher (Santa Barbara), Jessica Clark (Westlake Village), Ricky Lewis (Oxnard) and Cole Wakim (Simi Valley).
