JUNE 30, 2008 --- The newly-refurbished and expanded Lawrenceburg (Ind.) Speedway hosts the opening events of this year’s Chevy “Indiana Sprint Week” July 9-10 as participants in USAC’s National Sprint Car Series are gearing up for eight races in 11 nights.
Jerry Coons Jr. of Tucson, Ariz. gave his Hoffman Auto Racing Team a USAC record 70th National Sprint Car feature victory Friday night at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway, winning the “Showdown at Sundown” 60-lap race on the 3/4-mile paved oval. Coons passed early leader Shane Hmiel on lap 29, then resumed the lead when the second 30-lap segment began and led the rest of the way in his Kroger/Tide, Bounty/Pringles Beast/Mopar.
Tracy Hines finished second ahead of Damion Gardner, Levi Jones and Mike Murgoitio. Hmiel led the first 28 laps of the race but failed to finish the race due to mechanical problems. Driver Brad Sweet escaped injury when his car caught fire in the pit area.
Jones leads the series standings entering the eight-race ISW slate, 27 points ahead of Coons after Richmond. Cole Whitt of Alpine, Calif, who did not compete at Richmond, trails Jones by only 32, while Hines ranks fourth, 60 behind his Tony Stewart Racing teammate Jones.
