JUNE 16, 2008 --- The USAC National Sprint Car Series is preparing for its annual visit to Richmond (Va.) International Raceway where its 60-lap June 27 race is part of the track’s big USAC and Indy Car Series weekend featuring the 100-mile K & N USAC Silver Crown race presented by Optima Batteries and the SunTrust Indy Challenge. Bobby East won last year’s Richmond Sprint race and former winners Brian Tyler and Ron Gregory are also possible participants in the June 27 race, which marks the fourth appearance of the “Thunder & Lightning” machines on the 3/4-mile paved oval. East holds the 1-lap track qualifying mark of nearly 140 mph! Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind. won Saturday night’s 30-lap USAC National Sprint race at the Eldora Speedway as Cole Whitt of Alpine, Calif. locked up the “Border Wars XIV” championship with his eighth-place finish. Hines led all 30 laps in his Tony Stewart Racing Chevy/Bass Pro Shops Maxim/Kistler Chevy to beat Jesse Hockett, Chad Boat, Damion Gardner and Daron Clayton in a race interrupted on lap four by a four-car flip in turn one. Drivers Darren Hagen, Dave Darland, Mike Brecht and Brady Short all escaped injury in the incident. Levi Jones was the fastest qualifier and finished second in the “Border Wars XIV” points ahead of Hines. Riverside, Calif. driver Hagen continued the Keith Kunz Motorsports victory streak at Winchester Speedway Thursday night as he led the final seven laps to win the “Thursday Night Thunder” opener of “Border Wars XIV” at the storied 1/2-mile paved oval. Hagen made a daring pass of teammate Whitt on the bottom of turn one and held on for the win in his IWX/Advanced Racing Beast/Speedway Mopar. Whitt took second ahead of Jerry Coons Jr., Darland and Jones. Whitt also emerged as the series point leader. On lap 22 Hines and Jacob Wilson tangled on the frontstretch and Hines flipped, sliding on his cage into turn one before flipping upright. He was uninjured in the crash. During the red flag race leader Brian Gerster discovered mechanical problems with his car and had to retire from the event. Friday night’s USAC National Sprint Car race at Shady Bowl Speedway in DeGraff, Ohio was postponed due to rain. Track and USAC officials are reviewing possible dates for rescheduling and will announce a new date when firm.
