MAY 12, 2008 --- Levi Jones of Avon, Ind. holds onto a precarious point lead in the USAC National Sprint Car Series, with drivers Brady Bacon and Tracy Hines breathing down his neck going into May 21 and 22 races at Anderson and Terre Haute, Ind. Jones’ lead slipped to just three over Bacon and four over his teammate Hines after Saturday’s race at Rossburg, Ohio.
Don Branson and Jud Larson would have been proud of Tracy Hines Saturday night. Hines, of New Castle, Ind., earned his first USAC feature victory since recovering from severe leg injuries in a motorcycle accident in early 2007, taking the checkered flag in the “Don Branson/Jud Larson Pole Night Sprints” USAC National Sprint race at the Eldora Speedway.
Hines, driving for track owner Tony Stewart, started on the outside of the front row, led the first lap, then yielded to teammate Jones for four laps. He regained the lead on lap six and held off a determined Bacon to win the 30-lap race in his Chevy/Bass Pro Shops Maxim/Kistler Chevy. Jones had to stop for a loose hood and eventually finished 15th. Driver Brad Sweet escaped injury in two separate flips, while drivers Blake Fitzpatrick and Rob Chaney also escaped injury in flips.
Inclement weather and wet grounds forced cancellation of Friday’s scheduled USAC Sprint race at the Bloomington (Ind.) Speedway.
The May 21 race at Anderson Speedway is the 9th Annual “Banjo Glen Niebel Classic,” while the May 22 race at the Terre Haute Action Track is the 38th “Tony Hulman Classic.”
