WEEKLY REWIND - Week of June 15
|
POST-RACE QUOTES & NOTES:
Levi Jones, driver of the No. 20 Chevy/Bass Pro Shops entry for Tony Stewart Racing (TSR):
“At Winchester, we didn’t qualify as well as we would have liked to but we worked to get where we needed to be by the time the feature event started. It’s a very demanding, fast track and we were glad to come away from the night with a solid top-five finish for Chevy and Bass Pro Shops.
“At Eldora on Saturday, our night started out really well. Anytime you can set quick time at Eldora, you know your car is really good. Our Chevy engine program has been really good all season and, at a horsepower track like Eldora, it’s always an asset. In the heat race, we just missed a little and that put us in the semi feature. We learned a lot in the semi and made a few more changes before the feature. Unfortunately, the side panel folded back into the tire a few laps into the race. We had a few caution periods but I wasn’t able to come in as I didn’t want to give up my track position. I got pelted during the race. You can’t imagine the chunks of dirt and debris that the side panels absorb at speed. I was able to hold on and finish seventh. It wasn’t the ending we were looking for, especially after setting quick time. But it helped us maintain, not gain, in the point standings. We’ll head to Knoxville Raceway in the Midget this week to work on moving up in the series standings and hopefully getting our first win of the year.”
Tracy Hines, driver of the No. 21 Chevrolet/Bass Pro Shops entry for TSR:
“We were decent all day at Winchester. We qualified second-quick to start the night. In the heat race, we think we might have had a bad tire. It had shown signs of being a problem in practice and, as soon as we changed the tire following the heat, the car was completely different. In the feature, we started fifth and were biding our time until the handling on the cars came into play. We were all working on the guy in front of us at the time when our night was ended. Coming off of turn four, I felt something hit me in the rear end and the car just took off. I ended up flipping and, when that started, I just tucked into a ball inside the cage. Whenever I am in an accident where I flip, I don’t necessarily worry about the flip itself. I’m more aware of the possibility of protruding parts or debris coming into the cockpit of the car. When it ended, I was okay but the car was junk. We definitely didn’t want to see the race end that way. We had a good car and most likely would have continued to move forward for a good finish.
Tracy Hines, driver of the No. 21 Chevy/Bass Pro Shops entry for TSC (continued):
“Our event at Eldora Speedway started out a bit confusing in qualifying. I was flat out for both laps. The car was perfect and we just couldn’t get the speed we needed. We were only a tenth off from fast time but we’re not sure what made the car do what it did. In the heat, the track was slick and a little hard to pass on but we moved from sixth to fourth to transfer into the feature.
“Before we went out for the feature, I watched the semi to see where the track was going to be. I told Bobby (Barth, crew chief) I knew exactly where I was going to run. We had a good race and were able to get great restarts to stay out front. It was great to get our second win of the year at Eldora Speedway on Saturday. Having Tony (Stewart, team owner) there to watch for the night was pretty cool and it was great to put Chevy and Bass Pro Shops back in the winner’s circle again.
