POST-RACE QUOTES & NOTES:
Levi Jones, driver of the No. 20 Chevrolet/Bass Pro Shops/Maxim for Tony Stewart Racing (TSR):
“We had a really good car all night. We went out late in qualifying and timed in fifth-quick, which put us in a really good starting position for the feature. We started from the second row. In the feature, I got a really good start at the green. The No. 9 (Brad Sweet) was more concerned about racing Tracy (Hines, TSR teammate) up the track and I was able to get a really good run on them both.
“The USAC officials said I jumped the start. So when we had the red in the early laps, they dropped me back two spots to restart the race. We restarted third and I passed Jerry (Coons, Jr.) and was in second when the hood blows off. For the next four or five laps, I was holding onto the hood with one hand and driving with the other. I knew if we came in that I’d get put on the tail end of the field, so I tried to stay out as long as possible. After I came in to repair the hood, I started in the back and it just got really dusty. It wasn’t the way we wanted to see the night end, that’s for sure. We’d put ourselves in a position to win for Chevy and Bass Pro Shops and our luck just kind of pulled the run out from underneath us.”
Tracy Hines, driver of the No. 21 Chevrolet/Bass Pro Shops/Maxim for Tony Stewart Racing (TSR):
“The car was pretty good when we rolled out for hot laps. This is only the second time I’ve competed with the Maxim chassis at Eldora. The first time I ran it here was last year and the track was really, really rough that night, so we didn’t have a lot of information to go off of from that race. I wouldn’t say we struggled in qualifying, but we made some changes before the heat and we were able to learn in the heat race what we needed to do to make the car better. We adjusted the gears before the feature and Bobby (Barth, crew chief) and I guessed right, and the car was good for the feature.
“It definitely helps to start up front at Eldora, especially being in the front two rows. It probably would have been a really great race as my teammate, Levi Jones, started from the second row and we were up front early. I’m not sure what happened to him. I know he had to come into the pits. I got a really good start at the green, but on the backstretch, I wasn’t sure where I really needed to be. Levi got under me and that showed me where I needed to run at that point on the track. It felt like, for those first few laps, we were really even. He did have track position on me, though. Who knows what would have happened at the end of the race had he been able to stay out. Unfortunately for him, they dropped him back a couple of spots on the restart after the red and that put me out front. That’s really where I like to be, especially at Eldora. I’ve won here several times in my career and it’s definitely great to be able to put Chevy and Bass Pro Shops back in victory lane again at this track.”
