POST-RACE QUOTES & NOTES:
Levi Jones, driver of the No. 20 Chevrolet/Bass Pro Shops/Maxim for Tony Stewart Racing (TSR):
“We went out for qualifying late and were able to come away second quick. That really helped to put us in a good position early on in the night. At the start of the heat race, the car was really good. We were battling for the third position and I had contact with another car that turned down on me. I got upside-down and we left the track on the hook, but Rob (Hart, crew chief) and John (Sayne, crew) had parts ready on the truck to get the car back together. We went out for the semi-feature with a car that was as good as new and we did what we needed to in order to get in the feature.
“In the feature, I tried the top in the early laps and got behind a little bit. I had to work my way back up to the front but we had a good car and I was able to get to the front and make the pass for the lead. It was great to win the first race of the year for Tony Stewart Racing, Chevy, Bass Pro Shops and Armor All. Donny (Schatz, TSR World of Outlaws Sprint Series driver) won the outlaw race at Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway on Saturday night, but our race was over several hours before theirs finished. I was joking after we found out that he had won that he may have set quick time and won but we technically got TSR’s first win of the year because our race ended first. We’re really excited to have put that ‘W’ in the win column and we’re looking forward to heading to Bloomington (Ind.) Speedway and Eldora Speedway next weekend.”
Tracy Hines, driver of the No. 21 Chevrolet/Bass Pro Shops/Maxim for Tony Stewart Racing (TSR):
“We drew the 40th of 41 in qualifying order so we went to work to try to put ourselves in as good a position as possible in our group. We went out for our qualifying session and had the fastest car in the group and were 10th overall. In the heat race, I started a little farther back. And when the accident happened, I saw contact between two cars, which sent Levi (Jones, TSR teammate) across the track in front of me. I was standing on the brakes and turned as far right as possible, trying to avoid hitting him. But we ended up getting collected in the wreck. We didn’t have a lot of damage and I was able to restart in the heat.
“The track had been slick all night, pretty much from practice on, and we were working to take a little power out of our Chevy engines. The Kistler Chevys are really strong, and on a track that’s slick, you don’t need a lot of horsepower. But that’s a good problem to have. In the early laps of the feature, our car was really good. We had a caution period and the car just didn’t ever respond the way it had prior to the yellow flag. We lost a lot of air from the right-rear tire during the feature and it hurt the handling. We were able finish with a top-five and move into the top-three in the championship standings. We’ll go back to the shop and get ready for Bloomington and Eldora later this week.”
