WEEKLY REWIND - Week of April 20
|
POST-RACE QUOTES & NOTES:
Levi Jones, driver of the No. 20 Chevrolet/Bass Pro Shops/Maxim for Tony Stewart Racing (TSR):
“Early in the night, we went out and ran really well in hot laps and that’s always a good way to start the night. I had drawn a pretty late number for qualifying and I knew I was going to have to hit the right part of the track in order to have a chance at qualifying well. When I went out, I hit the bottom of the track, which was the part of the track that was still good at that point. We had a good heat race. I drove up to second and that put us on the third row to start the feature.
“In the feature, I had a couple of opportunities to move forward and we’d put ourselves in contention to get to the front a few times but I could never get the run I needed to get all the way to the front. I was trying to run the top in three and four. They were a little bottlenecked around the bottom. We never really had a long enough green flag period to get the run I needed. It seemed like we were constantly slowing down for a caution or a red. We had a really good car all night long and our Chevy engine ran great. I would have liked to have gotten the win but a top-five is a good way to leave the first race.”
Tracy Hines, driver of the No. 21 Chevrolet/Bass Pro Shops/Maxim for Tony Stewart Racing (TSR):
“We missed the set-up for Friday night’s race but we came away learning a lot about what we need to adjust when a track slicks off as much as it did at Gas City. The night started off with us drawing late for qualifying, but I’m not going to use that as an excuse. It certainly didn’t help us but I think I left a few tenths on the table in qualifying. I was a little confused about which line would be the best and qualifying that far down put the domino affect into motion. Anytime you qualify like that, you start on the tail of the other events for the night and you’ve got an uphill battle.
“The best our car was during the night was in the feature and I only got two laps in before I got caught up in someone else’s crash. Josh Clemons spun in front of me and I didn’t have anywhere to go. I hit him pretty square, well enough that our car would’ve survived and we would have been able to finish the race had no one else hit me. Unfortunately, Darren Hagen didn’t have anywhere to go either and he hit me, tearing the back-end of our car up pretty badly. It wasn’t anyone’s fault. We just got caught up in an accident. I was pretty upset our night ended that way. I hate giving up points like that in the beginning of the season. The TSR team will head back to the shop this week and we’ll get ready to go back to Winchester next Sunday. We tested very well there last week and I know that we’re going to have a good shot at putting Chevy and Bass Pro Shops in the winner’s circle there this weekend.”
