Press Release Santa Maria, CA - August 16, 2008...USAC/CRA 410 Sprint Cars, NMRA
TQ Midgets, and Mini Stocks invaded Santa Maria Speedway Saturday night.
*After starting the evening off with a fast lap of 14.277 seconds in
qualifying, Ventura driver Jimmy Crawford's night went downhill with a
fourteenth place finish in the 30-lap main event. Nic Faas, of Yorba Linda,
turned out to be the class of the field, starting on the pole and leading every
lap for the victory. Faas had second place Garrett Hansen, of Manhattan Beach,
hot on his heals for most of the event but managed to hold onto first place
despite some efforts in traffic by Hansen that almost got him the lead. Third
was Mike Spencer, of Temecula, followed by Riverside's David Cardey and Yorba
Linda's Rip Williams, who was back in the driver's seat for the event. The red
flag flew on lap 16 for Allan Ballard, of Oildale, who flipped into the turn two
catch fence, and again on lap 23 for Santa Maria's Danny Sheridan who was
launched into one of the back chute billboards. It was a hit in the points for
Sheridan, who was third in the USAC/CRA championship coming into the night.
However, second in points Blake Miller, of Yorba Linda, failed to make the
feature event, leaving Hansen and Spencer to benefit the most from Sheridan's
shunt. The 10-lap semi-main was won by Rodney Argo, of Gardena, and 10-lap heat
races went to Faas, Visalia's Greg Bragg, and Todd Hunsaker of Chino
Hills.
*Kenny Wiley, of Sunland, won an 8-lap heat race and the 25-lap main event to
lead the NMRA TQ Midgets. Cousins and teammates West Evans, of Moorpark, and
Chuck West, of Clovis, placed second and third. Fourth and fifth were
Bakersfield's Jimmy Dodson and Camarillo's Bruce Hiroshima. The other heat race
winner was Harbor City's Ron Ahrendt, and Camarillo's Richard Ortega, Jr.
claimed fast time of 16.355 seconds.
*Mini Stock champion contenders Justin Marsh, of Nipomo, and Justin Crockett,
of Arroyo Grande, came home second and third behind 20-lap feature winner Jeremy
Heroux, of Nipomo, to shrink the margin of lead between Crockett and Marsh to 8
points. Darrin Davis, of Atascadero, and Daylan Coffey, of Santa Maria, filled
out the top-five. Crockett and Davis also won 8-lap heat races.
*Next Saturday night will be the Speedway's 14th Annual Firefighter's Night,
featuring Late Model Stocks, D&S Automotive IMCA Modifieds, California
Lightning Sprints and Factory Stocks. Gates open at 3:00 p.m., with racing
slated to begin at 6:00 p.m. Tickets will be $15.00 for adults, $11.00 for
seniors (65+), $5.00 for children six to twelve, free for kids five and under.
Credit cards are not accepted. SMS is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166
interchange on Hutton Road.
