Santa Maria, CA - August 9, 2008...Bandit Sprint Cars, D&S Automotive IMCA
Modifieds, Mini Stocks, and VRA Dwarf Cars (augmented by several members of
"BAD", Bay Area Dwarfs), put on a memorable show Saturday night at
Santa Maria Speedway.
*Justyne Hamblin wowed race fans and surprised triple-point leader Peter
Murphy, of Clovis, with her exploits in the 30-lap Bandit Sprint Car main event.
Starting fifth in the 20-car field, the petite young lady from Hanford combined
a new motor, an affinity for the high groove and the will to win to score her
first ever main event win in the division. With his attention concentrated on
fending off Easton's Albert Pombo, Murphy, formerly of Sydney, Australia, could
do nothing but watch as Hamblin blew by, seven laps from the end, and pulled
away to victory. Murphy, Albert Pombo, Kerman's Davey Pombo, and Visalia's
Richard VanderWeerd filled out the top-five. Albert Pombo, Richard VanderWeerd,
and Jared Little, of Hanford, won 8-lap heat races.
*Santa Maria's Doug Thornton outlasted Nipomo's Kenny Kirkpatrick and point
leader Danny Lauer, of Santa Maria, to score his second 25-lap IMCA Modified
feature win of the season. Arroyo Grande's Chad Weber and Santa Maria's Josh
Vogt were fourth and fifth. Thornton took the lead seven laps into the event and
never relinquished it, even though he had constant pressure from Kirkpatrick and
Lauer. Thornton, Kirkpatrick, and Weber captured 8-lap heat races.
*Darrin Davis picked up his third 20-lap Mini Stock main event win of 2008,
coming home ahead of point leader Justin Crockett, of Arroyo Grande, and Jeremy
Heroux of Nipomo. Lompoc's Mike Weigel and Santa Maria's Daylan Coffey were next
to the checkers. Davis chased Santa Maria's Rob Gilbertson for the first eight
laps and Crockett for the next nine, before securing the lead. Davis and Heroux
snagged 8-lap heat wins.
*VRA Dwarf Cars ran two 20-lap main events, one for the Pro division and one
for the Senior division for drivers 45 years-of-age and older. One of the
visiting members of the Bay Area Dwarfs who came to town to race with the
Ventura Racing Association Dwarf Cars won the Pro feature. Ryan Diatte, of
Salinas, led the bulk of the event before being passed by second place Ray
Estrada, of Yucaipa, four laps from the end, only to repass Estrada on the final
lap for the victory. Jeff Shelton, of Simi Valley; Brian Saxton, of Mentone;
and, Gilbert Toste, of Gilroy, finished third through fifth. Bill Martinez, of
Salinas, led most of the Senior feature before being passed by Ventura's Ed
Niedzwiecki on lap 15. Martinez went back to the point on the seventeenth
circuit, but Niedzwiecki went back by on the final lap for the win. Martinez was
second, Port Hueneme's Glen Monk third, Newbury Park's Kevin Alverson fourth,
and Kent Benson, Sr., of Valencia, fifth. Eight-lap heat races were taken by
Diatte, Saxton, and Toste in the Pros and Niedzwiecki and Martinez in the
Seniors.
*Next Saturday night USAC/CRA 410 Sprint Cars make their second and final run
of 2008 at Santa Maria Speedway. NMRA TQ Midgets and Mini Stocks will join the
big-bore sprinters. Spectator gates will open at 3:00 p.m., with racing at 6:00
p.m. Admission will be $20.00 for adults, $16.00 for seniors (65+), $5.00 for
