Santa Maria, CA - July 5, 2008...Twenty-six Bandit Sprint Cars and twenty-two
D&S Automotive IMCA Modifieds headlined the show at Santa Maria Speedway
Saturday night along with Factory Stocks and Mini Stocks who fielded just under
twenty cars each. That made for non-stop main event action in all four
categories.
*The "B" main event in the Bandit division was supposed to tranfer
four cars to the back of the "A" feature, but when nearly half the
field was taken out in one incident on lap three, the checkers were thrown and
the remaining five cars went to the "A" for a 21-car starting field.
Derek Buckley, of Ojai, jumped out to the lead on lap 1 of the 30-lap
"A" feature and held it for the first nine circuits before being
overtaken by Ventura's Greg Taylor. Taylor led the remainder of the event,
followed closely to the checkers by Tipson's Dan Faria, Jr., and a flying Greg
Porte, of Atascadero, who had earlier set fast time of 13.747 seconds and won an
8-lap heat race. The remainder of the top-five found Kerman's Davey Pombo fourth
and Visalia's Greg Brag fifth. Other 8-lap heat race winners were Taylor, Faria,
and Albert Pombo of Easton.
*IMCA Modified drivers had trouble getting their 20-lap feature underway with
multiple incidents taking place on the opening lap and the next two. Once the
event began a sustained run, it was a shootout for the victory between point
leader Kenny Kirkpatrick, of Nipomo, second in points Danny Lauer, of Santa
Maria, and Clay Daly of Watsonville. After the fireworks in the first trio of
laps, Santa Maria's Jake Jones went to the point and stayed there until lap 13,
when he was passed by Lauer. Lauer stayed in front for the distance, follwed by
Kirkpatrick, Daly, Jones, and Tommy Laliberte of San Jose. Jones, Doug Thornton,
of Santa Maria, and Jimmy Reeves, of Laton, captured 8-lap heat races.
* *Factory Stocks had an unbelieveable 20-lap main event featuring a final
lap that saw five cars with a legitimate chance at victory. When the smoke
cleared Goleta's Matt Marchiando was in victory circle with Santa Maria's David
Addamo second and Atascadero's Charlie Scovell third. Fourth and fifth fell to
Glen Sparks, of Santa Maria, and Kevin Linson of Arroyo Grande. Marchiando and
Addamo won 8-lap heat races.
*Not be be outdone by the other divisions, the Mini Stocks had plenty of
action in their 20-lap feature run. Like the Modifieds, the Mini's had their two
point leaders fighting for victory. When the event was done, Nipomo's Justin
Marsh was first and Arroyo Grande's Justin Crockett was second. That gave Marsh
a four point lead in the title chase. The remainder of the top-five were Daylan
Coffey, of Santa Maria; Darrin Davis, of Atascadero; and Mike Weigel of Lompoc.
Weigel and Matt Sweeney, of Van Nuys, took 8-lap heat wins. *
*Next Saturday night Bandit Sprint Cars join USAC Midgets and NMRA TQ Midgets
in an all open wheel show on the 1/3-mile oval. Spectator gates will open at
3:00 p.m., with racing set to start at 6:00 p.m. Ticket prices will be $18.00
for adults, $14.00 for seniors (65+), $5.00 for children six to twelve, five and
