Santa Maria, CA - April 19, 2007...Bandit Sprint Cars, D&S Automotive IMCA Modifieds, Factory Stocks and Mini Stocks opened the 2008 racing season at Santa Maria Speedway Saturday night.
*In a 30-lap Bandit main slowed by three red flag periods, the worst being for a flip by Taft's Jason May in the third turn. May was uninjured an the event went on. The winner of the first two Bandit events of the season, Peter Murphy, of Clovis, was forced to go to the back of the pack after a first lap clash with defending Bandit champion Jesse Mack, now of Pismo Beach. By race end Murphy was back up to third place behind Albert Pombo, of Easton, and winner Richard VanderWeerd of Visalia. Rusty Carlile, of Bakersfield, placed fourth and Justyne Hamblin, of Hanford, fifth. Murphy set fast time of 13.581 seconds and Hamblin, Mack and Pombo captured 8-lap heat races.
*The 25-lap IMCA Modified "A" feature event was in the hands of Nipomo's Kenny Kirkpatrick when he went to the point on the ninth circuit. But, with two laps to go, past champion Jimmy Reeves, of Laton, slipped past Kirkpatrick to take the win. Rich Denman, of Coalinga, was third, followed by Tulare's Greg Mancebo and Santa Maria's Doug Thornton. Denman, Thornton and Chad Weber, of Arroyo Grande, won 8-lap heat races and Von Vondera, of Atascadero, took the 10-lap "B" main event.
*The Factory Stock 20 lapper was a runaway for defending title holder Kirk Morgan of Santa Maria. Morgan took the lead from the outside of the front row and left the rest of the field to battle for second place. Santa Maria's Michael Frazier edged Arroyo Grande's Kevin Linson at the finish line for the runner-up spot. Fourth went to Glen Sparks, of Santa Maria, and fifth to Theo Van De Sande of Carpinteria.
*Justin Marsh, of Nipomo, began the season with a victory in the 20-lap Mini Stock feature event. Second went to Justin Crockett, of Arroyo Grande, who also won the "Best Looking Car" award for his division. Jeremy Heroux, Matt Sweeney, of Van Nuys, and Frank Nyback, of Santa Maria finished third through fifth. Eight-lap heat race winners were Marsh, Atascadero's Aaron Cervantes and Santa Maria's Bill Jewell.
The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange, on Hutton Road.
