Aztec, NM (April 22, 2008) – Twenty three year old Porter Smith completed his first race in the USAC Western Sprint Car Open Wheel Challenge with a top three finish. Racing with the 2007 championship winning team, Kaplan-Gennuso Racing, Porter took a quick liking to the All American Speedway in Roseville, CA. This was only the second time in a Sprint Car for the Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle Development driver. Porter competed in the SRL Western Late Model series in 2007 coming in fourth in points and capturing one win on the season.
After improving throughout practice and working on setup, Smith qualified third breaking the track record along with the top two qualifiers. Starting sixth for the feature race Smith quickly moved up to second. A caution came out bunching up the field giving Smith the opportunity to take the lead with a picture perfect restart. He would continue to lead until lap sixteen when the second caution came out.
Unfortunately race officials moved Smith back to second believing that he had jumped the prior start. With the green flag flying on the restart Porter would try the same move that worked before, but he could not pull it off and in the process was passed by the third place driver where he would end the race just missing out on second by half a car length. In the end this is a great start to the season for this up and coming star.
“The Kaplan-Gennuso team was spot on all day long,” commented Porter Smith. “The crew really do great work and I can’t thank them enough. I also have to thank my family, girlfriend, and everybody else back home who all support and believe in this dream as much as I do.”
