56TH “HOOSIER HUNDRED” FRIDAY AT THE INDIANA STATE FAIRGROUNDS |

MAY 19, 2008 --- Defending two-time K & N USAC Silver Crown Series Champion Bud Kaeding and two-time USAC National Midget Champion Jerry Coons Jr. are tied for the point lead in the series presented by Optima Batteries. Friday they should break that tie when the Indiana State Fairgrounds again hosts one of America’s premier dirt-track events – the 56th “Hoosier Hundred.” The keystone event of the series since its debut in 1953, the “Hoosier Hundred” has a storied history of races won by an impressive list of America’s greatest dirt-track drivers. Included among those winners are Indianapolis 500 Champions A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Parnelli Jones, Rodger Ward, Al Unser, Jimmy Bryan and Bob Sweikert. Coons won the series opener at Phoenix, Ariz. in February but he is among a stellar list of drivers who will seek their first ‘Hoosier Hundred” victory Friday. Kaeding, who has four career series victories, won last year’s title without the aid of a win. Tracy Hines, who leads this year’s Mopar Midget Series, has started eight times and placed sixth or better seven times! He’ll team with Levi Jones for Tony Stewart Racing. Jones, seeking his seventh start, still remembers his disappointing runner-up finish in 2006 after leading 99 laps and losing to teammate Josh Wise on the final lap! Both Hines and Jones are looking for their first “Hoosier Hundred” triumph. Track qualifying record holder Johnny Parsons, who first raced in the event 38 years ago, will seek a record 30th start! He also is looking for that elusive victory after finishing second in 1973 and 1989. His recent performances have been notable and drivers will be aiming at his qualifying record of 114.726 mph set in 1995. Former series champion Paul White of Temple, Texas also returns for another chance at victory. The third-place finisher in 2003, White actually posted a speed of 115.485 mph during an incomplete qualifying session in 2005. Indiana Sprint car legend Jon Stanbrough and Brian Tyler are two others seeking their first “Hoosier Hundred” win. Tyler’s best career finish is a sixth, while Stanbrough has not yet recorded a top-10. One driver not looking for his first “Hoosier Hundred” win is Dave Darland. The Lincoln, Ind. driver must rate a pre-race favorite, having scored three wins in the traditional classic, the latest in 2004. Kenny Jacobs set the 100-mile race record of 106.977 mph in 1987.
