FEBRUARY 18, 2008 --- Jerry Coons Jr. of Tucson, Ariz. will lead the USAC K
& N Silver Crown Championship Series presented by Optima Batteries to the
tradition-rich “Hoosier Hundred” May 23 in Indianapolis, Ind. after winning
Saturday night’s series opener at Phoenix, Ariz.
Coons will be aiming for his third straight dirt-track triumph, having also
won last September’s “4-Crown Nationals” feature at Rossburg, Ohio. Coons
finished ninth at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in 2006 and last year’s
“Hoosier Hundred” was canceled due to rain.
Coons is currently tied with defending two-time series champion Bud Kaeding
for the series point lead after they finished 1-2 at Manzanita Speedway in
Phoenix. The “Copper on Dirt” presented by Sands Chevrolet saw Coons wrest
the lead from Kaeding on lap 39 and he led the final 12 circuits in his Rotondo
Weirich Beast/Chevy. Kaeding, who led 26 of the 50 laps, finished second ahead
of 2007 race winner Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Shane Cottle and Tracy Hines.
Jon Stanbrough, who started on the pole and led the first seven laps, spun on
lap 14 and eventually retired with a broken clutch on lap 43.
Kaeding is trying to become the first driver in the series’ 38-year history
to claim three consecutive titles.
Raisn forced postponement of Friday’s scheduled Phoenix preliminaries,
which were held Saturday afternoon.
