JANUARY
23, 2008 --- Former USAC driver Jason McCord of Anderson, Ind. has been named Coordinator of USAC’s K & N Silver Crown Championship Series. A former series participant, he brings a wealth of knowledge to his new post, both from the participant and administrative side, having been involved for the past two years as an administrator with the Premier Racing Association.
McCord’s driving career ended in 2006 but included a victory at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis in 2003 and a half-dozen victories in the USAC Sprint Car Series where he earned the 1995 “Most Improved Driver” honors.
“I look forward to the challenges ahead for the Silver Crown Series as we continue to develop and refine the new pavement car, while maintaining the time-honored tradition of dirt-track racing,” says McCord. “We realize the great heritage this series has and I am glad to be a part of the continuing legacy. We project a successful season in 2008 while expecting expansion in 2009 and beyond.”
The opening showcase for USAC’s 2008 K & N Silver Crown Series is the February 15-16 “Copper on Dirt” spectacular at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix. Ariz. The “tripleheader” also features USAC/CRA Sprint Cars and the Mopar USAC National/Western Midget Series.
The 2008 season includes five additional dirt-track venues and five pavement outings, concluding with the “Copper World Classic” at Phoenix (Ariz.) International Raceway November 6 in conjunction the Checker Auto Parts 500 NASCAR events.
The “track too tough to tame” welcomes the series back in 2008 as Darlington (S.C.) Raceway hosts a May 8 event in conjunction with its traditional NASCAR weekend, while the traditional “Hoosier Hundred” unfolds at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis May 23.
Richmond (Va.) Raceway welcomes the Silver Crown cars back for its weekend which also features the SunTrust Indy Challenge for the Indy Car Series, with the Silver Crown cars competing on June 28. The USAC National Sprint cars also compete as part of the Richmond weekend on June 27.
On July 24 the series competes at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis as part of the track’s big “Kroger Speedfest” weekend of racing leading up to the Allstate 400 at The Brickyard at nearby Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The popular “Sumar Classic” returns to the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track July 25 as the track prepares for an announcement regarding new management. Preliminary plans call for the cars to be pitted back in the infield as was the case for many years at the half-mile dirt oval.
Iowa Speedway in Newton, one of America’s newest and fastest ovals, hosts the K & N Silver Crown cars on August 10 in conjunction with the track’s Grand Am Koni Challenge activities.
The “Tony Bettenhausen 100” at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield is set for August 16 and the “Ted Horn 100” at the DuQuoin (Ill.) State Fairgrounds is slated for August 31.
The “Four Crown Nationals” at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, also featuring USAC National Sprints and Mopar USAC National Midgets, is targeted for September 20.
